From Tim Gibbs, CEO

4CED Bringing SJ County Opportunities to the World's Attention

Tim Gibbs, 4CED CEO

4CED Represents SJ County at the SelectUSA International Economic Development Summit

Earlier this month Tim Gibbs represented 4CED and San Juan County at the nation’s largest international economic development trade conference. This was 4CED’s first visit to the conference. The Select USA Investment Summit was held May 11-14 in suburban Baltimore and was attended by a record-setting 5,500 registrants from over 100 international markets and 54 U.S. states and territories.

The SelectUSA Investment Summit was established in June 2011 by Presidential Executive Order to attract and retain investment in the American economy. Housed within the U.S. Department of Commerce, SelectUSA is charged with promoting and facilitating business investment into the United States. Since its inception, SelectUSA has helped generate more than $270 billion in client-verified investment projects, supporting more than 240,000 U.S. jobs.

The investment summit is led by the U.S. Department of Commerce with participation and support from the White House, U.S. Cabinet secretaries, governors, ambassadors, leading executives from global organizations, and representatives from U.S. government agencies.

New Mexico was well represented at SelectUSA. The New Mexico Partnership, New Mexico’s state designated single-point-of-contact for companies considering New Mexico for their next expansion, organized New Mexico’s booth. In addition to Melinda Allen, President and CEO of the New Mexico Partnership, other attendees at New Mexico attendees at SelectUSA included Governor Lujan Grisham, New Mexico Economic Development Department Secretary Rob Black and Patty Lundstrom, Executive Director of the Greater Gallup Economic Development Corporation.

The New Mexico delegation spoke with over 100 international companies. Specifically, 4CED had deeper conversations with manufacturing companies from Austria and Turkmenistan and 4CED is following up with additional information to both of these entities.

These and other international companies at the show are vetted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and trade specialists from the U.S. State Department as condition of attending the event. Not surprisingly, many international companies are expressing increased interest in U.S. investment as a result of developments in U.S. tariff policies.

At the event, Governor Lujan Grisham announced the launch of NMexus (MEK-sus).

Located in Albuquerque’s Mesa del Sol innovation district, the NMexus accelerator is a first-of-its-kind commercialization center for companies from India, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, equipping them with the tools necessary to successfully expand operations in New Mexico and succeed in the U.S. market. “By creating global partnerships that transcend borders, New Mexico has strategically positioned itself to lead the reshoring movement,” Gov. Lujan Grisham said.

Her announcement included news that seven companies from India and Oman would comprise the first cohort moving into the center. Although the initial focus of the commercialization center is the Rio Grande corridor, 4CED is hopeful that NMexus will also eventually help expose international investors to other parts of the state including San Juan County.

Canada Up Next . . .

Continuing the effort to build exposure for San Juan County economic development opportunities, CEO Tim Gibbs will be attending the Global Energy Show Canada in Calgary on June 10-12. This is one of the world’s largest energy trade shows.

Canada is USA’s largest trading partner and there are multiple energy Canadian energy companies and energy equipment manufacturing companies already active in the U.S. or looking to expand.

San Juan County would be an ideal home for a Canadian energy company or energy equipment manufacturing company looking to expand U.S. presence in an area like San Juan County already well renowned for energy production, friendly business climate and the great energy workforce training opportunities at the San Juan College School of Energy

To help it stage for maximum success in Calgary, 4CED has retained the services of ResearchFDI to help set up specific networking meetings.

ResearchFDI has an experienced team of economic development and research consultants that has generated leads and investment projects for more than 700 economic development organizations. The organization’s mission is to put its clients in front of corporate decision makers seeking to expand or relocate their organizations to a new geographic location.
