2024-2025

Green School Award Winner

The Green School Award recipient for the 2024-2025 school year is🥁.....Ventura Charter School!

The Green School Award recognizes excellence in environmental stewardship demonstrated by a school in the City of Ventura.

Green School Award applicants are considered for their water and energy conservation, environmental education and projects, and more.

Read on about Ventura Charter’s exemplary environmental practices:

Environmental Stewardship 🍃

  • Ventura Charter’s school garden involves participation from multiple grades. 4th graders, for example, sow native plant seeds each spring and kindergarteners participate in an annual habitat project, learning about a specific habitat’s unique flora and fauna. Ventura Charter’s butterfly garden is also a certified habitat by the National Wildlife Federation 🦋

Water Conservation 🌊

  • Rainwater collection barrels are used for drip-irrigation in the garden and for students to care for potted plants throughout campus 🌻

  • “Trout in the Classroom”, a partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, educated third graders on how to raise endangered rainbow trout from eggs to fry and conducted field studies of local water resources, learning about water conservation and ecology 🐟

Environmental Projects 🍽️

  • Ventura Charter School implemented a Zero Waste Lunch Program, which encourages students and families to use reusable utensils, containers, cloth napkins, and refillable water bottles 🍶
  • Ventura Charter School participates in ink cartridge, e-waste and plastic film recycling efforts to ensure students understand the importance of cyclical consumption and proper waste procedures ♻️

"At Ventura Charter School, environmental stewardship is not just a program—it is embedded in our school’s culture. As an expeditionary learning school, we prioritize hands-on, project-based education that empowers students to critically engage with real-world issues like climate change, water conservation, and sustainability."

Earth Day Festival at Plaza Park 🌎

Environmental Sustainability staff celebrated Earth Day at Plaza Park on April 19, joining the MERITO Foundation's annual Earth Day event!

The event gathered over 30 green businesses, sustainably minded vendors, and nonprofit groups together to spread Earth Day cheer and educate residents on the many ways to 'walk the walk' of environmentalism. The event was family friendly with a Kids Zone, food, and live music throughout the day.

Our interactive 'Fridge' pop-up with tips on proper produce storage taught visitors to the Environmental Sustainability booth that food waste prevention starts right after grocery shopping.

A steady stream of visitors also gave our popular 'Where Does it Go?' wheel a spin, where visitors sorted different waste items into recycling, compost, or trash, gaining new knowledge on the value of proper waste sorting, along with fun giveaways to help make sustainability an everyday practice 🌿

Volunteer Opportunity!

Zero Waste Ambassador at the 4th of July Street Fair! 💥

As a Zero Waste Ambassador at the 4th of July Street Fair, you’ll help keep our community cleaner and greener by guiding event attendees on how to properly sort their waste into compost, recycling, and landfill bins. Volunteers will staff waste stations, educate participants, and promote sustainable habits that benefit Ventura and beyond.

Here's to a Greener School Year! 🌻

As the 2024-2025 Ventura Unified School District school year winds down, we are proud to reflect on our accomplishments of our City of Ventura Green Schools Program!

This school year we reached 4,603 students with a total of 91 environmental science lessons 👩‍🏫

Our Green Schools program presented to various K-12 classrooms across the City of Ventura, educating students on a variety of important environmental topics, like:

🌊 Preventing stormwater pollution and protecting our local Ventura watershed

🐛 Discovering the benefits of Vermiculture (worm composting)

🔋 Exploring renewable energy solutions

♻️ Improving waste management sorting practices

We are looking forward to another school year of green goals and new eco-heroes! 🌎

2025 MERITO Foundation EECCOA Competition

The City of Ventura's Environmental Sustainability staff were honored to participate as judges for the MERITO Foundation's 10th Annual EECCOA Challenge!

MERITO’s EECCOA (Energy Efficiency to Mitigate Climate Change and Ocean Acidification) competition challenges local middle and high school students to develop innovative solutions targeted at reducing their school’s carbon footprint or raising public awareness about the environmental benefits of removing the Matilija Dam on the Ventura River.

43 students from across Ventura schools competed this year, with winners chosen from each of EECCOA's four areas of competition:

💡 Energy Efficiency

🌊 Water Conservation

♻️ Waste Reduction

💧 Matilija Dam Removal Awareness

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all students for leading the next generation of environmental stewards! 🐾

Help Keep Ventura Styrofoam Free!

A friendly reminder to City of Ventura residents that you can help us educate local businesses on the environmental impacts of using Styrofoam (also known as EPS - expanded polystyrene).

If you recently visited a local business providing Styrofoam containers, please email: epsban@cityofventura.ca.gov so we can help them find sustainable alternatives.

As of July 1, 2021, the City of Ventura prohibits businesses selling food and beverages from using Styrofoam containers such as cups, plates, bowls, meat trays, clamshells and coolers. Styrofoam is a prevalent form of litter found in storm drains, creeks, rivers, beaches, parks, and open spaces. For more information and resources, please visit: EPS Ban

You can help support our community's efforts to preserve the health and beauty of Ventura's open spaces for the enjoyment of all!
