| Friends and Colleagues, Who was Lewis H. Clark? We know a little about him. He was a resident of Pultneyville, New York. He was born around 1827, and was the likely original owner of this 1844 Greek grammar book. We don’t know who crafted a homemade (vernacular) cover for the book, putting to use a flour bag which had contained buckwheat flour, perhaps it was young Lewis Clark, though the bag with its red and blue printing looks to be of a later period. The image of a buck on the bag is a clue that it held buckwheat flour! We do know that when still in his 20’s Lewis Clark was a founding trustee of Solus Academy, in Solus which is quite close to Pultneyville. He was Principal of the Academy according to the 1860 census. His obituary lauded him as a brilliant man. Obituaries being what they are, we can’t attest to this. Either Lewis made the cover at a later date, or perhaps one of the students at Solus Academy. This is all supposition. What we do know it that buckwheat flour had a nutty flavor, and made excellent pancakes. It’s fun to speculate that pancakes were served from time to time to the young folks at Solus Academy.
