Best in Show winners at the Awards Presentation Dinner (from left) Rio Vista Olives, Longridge Olives, Gooramadda Olives and Grassy Spur Olives.
Varietals shone at the 2024 Australian International Olive Awards, with both Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) in Show trophies awarded to single varietal oils - Rio Vista’s Hardy’s Mammoth (Commercial Volume) and Grassy Spur Olives’ Frantoio (Boutique Volume).
The Best Table Olive in Show awards also championed varietal fruit, with Gooramadda Olives taking the Boutique Volume trophy and Chile’s Atacama Aceituna Ltda the Commercial Volume award, both for their Kalamata olives.
The trophy for Best Flavoured Olive Oil of Show, Commercial Volume, went to Longridge Olives for its Lemon Agrumato, while Best Flavoured Olive Oil of Show, Boutique Volume was awarded to Keyneton Olive Oil for its Chilli Infused.

Leading neurologists and movement disorder specialists have made submissions to the Australian chemical regulator calling for a ban on paraquat, over its links with Parkinson's disease.
This is backed up by on-the-ground concern: if you’re using paraquat, or have in the past, please be alert to any health symptoms.

Suppliers encouraged to submit feedback on supermarket dealings
To ensure farmers and suppliers get a fair go when dealing with the major supermarkets - Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Metcash – the Government is encouraging affected businesses to submit feedback to the 2024 Annual Food and Grocery Code (the Code) Independent Reviewer’s Survey. The survey monitors compliance with the Code, which mandates conduct between supermarkets and their suppliers. Suppliers eligible for participation in the survey will have received correspondence from the Independent Reviewer, Chris Leptos AO, containing the survey link.

New resources about pay and conditions, enterprise agreements and bargaining
The Fair Work Commission and the Fair Work Ombudsman have launched new resources about bargaining, agreement-making and entitlements in the Fair Work system.
The Commission’s Online Learning Portal now provides to access new animations and downloadable resources on:
- Understanding employee pay and entitlements
- Understanding enterprise agreements
- Understanding bargaining

North Island producers turned the tide in 2024, taking out the majority of top awards at the 2024 New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards.
The top awards for the 2024 competition were:
Best in Show – Telegraph Hill Premium Blend, Hawke’s Bay
Best Boutique – Blue Earth Estate Intense, Wairarapa
Reserve Best in Show – River Grove Koroneiki, Wairarapa
Reserve Best Boutique – Leafyridge Olives Picual, Wairarapa
Best Flavoured Oil – Vernazoni Agrumato, Auckland

Many Greek olive oil producers have installed security cameras in their fields and warehouses to prevent theft.
On a Monday morning, farmer Spyros Staramos was outside his oil mill in Aitoliko, a town in Western Greece. It would have been just another typical Monday for him if he hadn’t seen that the two locks on his warehouse had been broken.

Starbucks is getting rid of its olive oil-infused lineup of drinks. Courtesy Starbucks.
Starbucks is eliminating its controversial olive oil-infused drinks from the menu, less than a year after they made their nationwide debut. The lineup of “Oleato” drinks will be eliminated from Starbucks’ menus in the US and Canada beginning in early November.
Seems not everything is better with olive oil after all!
