What's happening? Skyline Center was developed many years ago by the Charles E Smith Companies, the same developer of Crystal City. It was a very successful mixed-use project, with condos and apartments along the periphery, and eight office buildings, including the prominent Skyline Tower building. Six of the office buildings are interconnected by an underground system of parking garages, a health club and a huge Target. In recent years, the six inter-connected buildings have been essentially vacant.
In 2017, the County became a regional leader when we adopted measures to facilitate transforming vacant office buildings into residential use. The Board previously approved the conversion of three of the office buildings at Skyline into 720 live/work units that will be ready for occupancy in March.
Today, we approved the conversion of two more of the buildings into 510 live /work units.
In these buildings, you can use a unit as a residence, as a place for you to live and work, or as an office, thus providing great flexibility to meet the needs of resident.
The conversion of the five buildings will bring new economic vitality to what has been a pretty dead place. The projects will add considerable interior and exterior amenities that are open to the public, and will add additional retail uses, thus fulfilling our revitalization and economic development goals. This is also an environmental win, as using existing buildings rather than tearing down and building new has tremendous sustainability benefits.
