Yard Sign Placement

As we enter the election season, we would like to remind residents of the temporary signage regulations for the City. During the 30 days prior to an election, and ending 7 days after the event, the maximum number of signs permitted is 6. An additional yard sign is granted to those properties facing more than one street, Lake Monona, or the Yahara River. Each yard sign may be up to 6 square feet in size, with a maximum cumulative sign area of 36 square feet. Yard signs must also adhere to a maximum height of 4 feet.

It's important to note that yard signs must be located on-premises. If placed on the City right-of-way adjacent to the property's street frontage, signs must not obstruct traffic visibility and should be positioned a minimum of 2 feet from the back of the curb, or 2 feet from the back of the sidewalk, whichever is applicable. Off-premises yard signs are not permitted.

Between the February and April elections, there is a 5-day period during which the maximum number of signs decreases to 2. However, the City is not mandating Monona residents or property owners to reduce their number of yard signs to 2 during this period. The maximum limit of 6 signs outlined above remains in effect until 7 days after the April 2nd election.

It's important to clarify that the City does not regulate the content of signs. Election signs, as long as they adhere to the specified size, location, and number criteria listed above, may be displayed at any time."

These adjustments mainly focus on maintaining consistency in language and ensuring clarity in the regulations outlined.

City Council Votes to Switch Bus Service

 to Madison Metro

At its December 18th meeting, the City Council voted in favor of a Resolution authorizing the negotiation of a contract with Madison Metro. The City’s Transit Commission voted unanimously in favor of the move, after more than a year and a half of research, community engagement including two surveys and three Public Information Meetings, and discussions with both Madison Metro and the City’s currently contracted provider, First Student. The Council voted 5-1 in favor of the Resolution, which reads as follows:

the Monona Transit Commission recommends that the City of Monona contract with Madison Metro to (1) provide weekday bus service from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on a two-way basis (C3), (2) guarantee a C3 route that loops southbound on Femrite Drive and returns northbound, (3) provide seven-day Paratransit Service to qualifying individuals with disabilities, and (4) ensure that buses on existing bus routes that pass through Monona with extended hours (C, G & L) open their doors within Monona at reasonable intervals.

  • The C, C3, G and L Routes included in the Resolution can be found on the City’s web site
  • As was discussed at the meeting, the southern end of the C3 route is still being worked on, but the rest of the route is firm. The Transit Commission will be consulting with the Police Department and the Department of Public Works as they finalize route stops, timing, and infrastructure with Madison Metro.
  • They will also continue to update the Transit FAQ’s.
  • Expanded bus service was a top recommendation in the City’s recently produced Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Report.
  • It also reflects the City’s commitment to sustainability. With the move, Monona becomes the last community in the entire Madison Metropolitan area to join Metro’s newly designed regional transit network.
  • The switch to Metro is not anticipated to begin until late 2024.

Updates from Monona Police Department

Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week

The City of Monona Police Department would like to recognize our crossing guard, Kim Richman, for his continued work and effort to keep the kids of Monona safe that are walking to and from school. Kim is kind, courteous and even provides treats to dogs who pass by his post! If you see Kim, give him a friendly shout out during Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week; which is February 19th-February 23rd.

New Community Service Officer (CSO) Role

Additionally, we are excited to announce that Kim Richman will be starting in a newly formed Community Service Officer (CSO) role. In this role, Kim will assist the PD in tasks such as parking enforcement, traffic control during larger events and other calls for service such as found bicycles or lost animals. We want everyone to know that CSO Richman is not a sworn law enforcement officer and he will not be able to take citizen complaints or investigate crimes. CSO Richman will be wearing a hi-visibility neon vest and will be operating different city owned vehicles that are marked with “Monona CSO” magnets.
