2024 Jack Sweney Youth Tennis Program

Join us for the Jack Sweney Memorial Youth Tennis Tournament and Carnival on July 18 from 9am-noon.

PEORIA (July 17, 2024) – The Peoria Park District is proud to announce the Jack Sweney Memorial Youth Tennis Tournament and Carnival, taking place on July 18th from 9 am until noon at Bradley Park to conclude the 2024 season. This event honors the memory of Jack Sweney, a beloved tennis advocate and community leader, and aims to inspire a new generation of tennis enthusiasts.

Thanks to a generous grant from the family of Jack Sweney and the Community Foundation, the Peoria Park District conducted a free summer youth tennis lesson program at Bradley Park. Four series of lessons have occurred since June 3rd for children ages 7-14.  Over the past eighteen years of existence, the program has served over 2,000 Peoria-area kids, who have not only learned more about the game of tennis, but have also earned a complimentary t-shirt, racquet and sleeve of tennis balls.

"At the end of third week of lessons, each child receives a new tennis racquet and a can of tennis balls to keep," stated Scott Loftus, Superintendent of Recreation for the Peoria Park District. "This ensures they have the tools to keep playing the game long after their 4 weeks of lessons," Loftus continued.

Jack Sweney (1913-2002) was a pillar of the Peoria community, known for his contributions through his business endeavors with Sweney Gas Stations and Sweco Oil Company, as well as his leadership on various boards. A passionate tennis player, Jack played on the University of Illinois tennis team and remained active on Peoria’s tennis courts for many years. He was a charter member of the Racquet Club of Peoria (now River City Athletic Club) and continued playing at the Country Club of Peoria well into his eighties. Known for his quick feet, fast hands, and competitive spirit, he was also affectionately called “Gentle Jack” for his caring and courteous nature.

This annual event, dedicated in his memory, seeks to instill Jack’s love for tennis in every participant. The Peoria Park District invites the community to join in the celebration and support our youth as they discover the joy and benefits of playing tennis.
