Leading the Way: A Standout Moment from the National Governors Association Convening

Coconino County Workforce Board Executive Director Billy Francis represented Arizona at the forefront of a recent National Governors Association (NGA) Center convening in Washington D.C. This high-profile event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders – innovative state teams like Arizona's, seasoned federal agency leaders, forward-looking industry partners, and renowned skills-based hiring experts.

The agenda delved deeply into this critical topic, fostering a comprehensive discussion. Mr. Francis actively participated, shaping a clear vision for the future of public sector hiring. He shared valuable insights gleaned from Arizona's experiences and collaborated on developing strategic implementation plans. These plans will empower state agencies across the nation to launch and manage successful skills-based hiring initiatives.

Job Fair Event in May


ARIZONA@WORK Coconino County co-hosted a job fair with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona at the Department of Economic Security Building on 4th Street. There were 13 partners and employers present at the event, providing information on their open positions and supportive opportunities to the community members who came to the event. The One-Stop Operator worked on building relationships with the event participants, both employers and community members, to ensure the event operated smoothly. Community members were directed to the One-Stop Center if they needed assistance with generating a resume for the event.

Forging Talent Pipeline for Fire Service


Coconino Community College's Fire Science Program partnered with Flagstaff Fire Department's House of Jacks (HOJ) for the 2nd Firefighter Recruitment Event at CCC Lonetree last May 18. This partnership aims to reach out and find people to become interested in pursuing a career in the Fire Service. Attendees performed supervised hands-one firefighter functions and connected with on-site resources to help start their journey. This program serves people who want to pursue new or ongoing training in the Fire Service.

12th Annual High Country Stand Down

Coconino County Workforce Development Board Executive Director Billy Francis and his team participated in the High Country Stand Down event on May 15th. It was inspiring to witness numerous organizations and agencies coming together to support veterans by providing assistance and services. Rest assured, ARIZONA@WORK Coconino County remains dedicated to serving our veterans and community in every possible way.

City of Flagstaff Council tackles City’s Workforce Development Strategic Plan 

In a work session last May 28, the City of Flagstaff Council discussed the draft Workforce Development Strategic Plan prepared and presented by consultant Keen Independent Research LLC.

The goals identified in the City’s plan include promoting existing programs and pathways to the 4-yr+ degree required jobs; encouraging new certification and training programs; promoting upskilling; and facilitating conversations with businesses to determine news. 

The City’s workforce development analysis and strategic plan is in draft form and may be amended based on the feedback provided by the public and Council. It is intended to be considered by the Council for adoption on July 2nd.
