The New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services, State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) has published the 2024 Medicare Part D Stand-Alone Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) in NJ.
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are enrolled in NJ FamilyCare/Medicaid and Medicare are considered "dual eligibles." Enrollment in a Medicare Part D drug plan is mandatory for dual eligibles, unless the individual has creditable drug coverage from a private health insurance plan that is as good or better than Medicare Part D.
Many dual eligibles are automatically enrolled into a random Part D "benchmark" plan that has basic benefits (not enhanced) and a premium amount below the "benchmark" level established by Medicare each year. Dual eligibles enrolled in a benchmark plan pay a $0 monthly premium, however, there are only 2 benchmark plans in NJ for 2024. Therefore, if you are notified by your HMO that you will have to pay a monthly premium this year, it is possible that your PDP is no longer a benchmark plan in 2024. For more information, see the fact sheets posted below, or the webinar recording from November 13, 2023, presented by Lisa Ford, Senior Director of The Arc of New Jersey Family Institute, and Mary McGeary, Director of SHIP.
SHIP provides free help to NJ Medicare beneficiaries who have problems with, or questions, about health insurance. Contact your local SHIP office, call their toll free hotline at 1-800-792-8820, or visit their website.
