Last week’s issue outlined why Locally Owned & Operated practices should develop win/win relationships with influential Chambers of Commerce. We now underscore techniques for Practice Identity to capitalize upon competitive advantages. In a confusing hearing care marketplace with “noisy (& frequently unethical) tactics,” appealing differentiation is pivotal. With current and prospective consumers enveloped by sameness, standing out helps them know how The Gold Standard you set is different.

Are you familiar with (I wasn’t) the Smithsonian affiliated International Storytelling Center whose goal is “to inspire and empower people everywhere to capture and tell their stories, listen to the stories of others, and use storytelling to produce positive change.” 


Director Jimmy Neil Smith said: “We are all storytellers. We all live in a network of stories. There isn’t a stronger connection between people than storytelling.”

Getting inspired, what’s your unique Practice Story?


In fact, it’s not just What, but How we tell them. David JP Phillips’ Magical Science of Storytelling TEDx talk details the “Angel’s Cocktail,” an influential brew earning 4.8 million views. As we see and learn, certain cognitive reactions are naturally wired to amplify impact. Specifically:

1. Dopamine stimulates attention and better memory, motivating us to figure the story out. High levels of dopamine are induced when stories feature engaging suspense.

2. Oxytocin nurtures trust, generosity, and personal bonding. To induce this hormone, storytelling creates empathy and humane feelings towards the character or situation. 

3. Endorphins fuel creativity, relaxation and focus by making people laugh during the story. Humor triggers emotional investment.
