New wine appreciation class open to community | |

FLCC will begin offering wine appreciation classes, starting with Wines of the World in spring 2023 and Wines of Europe the following fall.
Wines of the World is a 15-week, one-credit class running 4:30 to 6:20 p.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 26, at the FLCC Viticulture and Wine Center off Pre-emption Road in Geneva.
The course will survey the geographic, cultural and historical context of the wine regions of America, Africa, Australia, and Asia. Students will taste four to eight wines per class and learn an analytical framework and methodology to evaluate, describe, record, and communicate the wine quality and character to their classmates.
Michael Penn, shown above, instructor of viticulture and wine technology, developed and will teach the courses. Costs are $213 for tuition and $100 for fees. Both spring and fall classes will have an enrollment cap of 15. The general public can sign up for most FLCC classes without enrolling in a degree or certificate program. (FLCC also permits those 60 or over to audit courses without tuition, examination, grading or credit on a space-available basis.)
More information about the fall class, Wines of Europe, will be available in April 2023.
FLCC offers a 64 credit-hour degree program in viticulture and wine technology and a 29 credit-hour certificate program. More information is available at flcc.edu/viticulture.
Students in the program produce commercial wines that are available at Ryan’s Wine and Spirits in Canandaigua and Pedulla’s Wine and Liquor in Geneva. Orders can also be arranged via online form on the FLCC website at flcc.edu/viticulture-center.

Tickets for the annual Vintners and Valentines winemakers dinner, scheduled for March 3, are now on sale.
The event features a gourmet dinner prepared by culinary arts faculty and students. A local winemaker hosts each table and pairs wines with the courses while discussing the winemaking process.

Trout a la Navarra: Boneless rainbow trout fillets sauteed with garlic and olive oil and finished with crispy prosciutto and beurre blanc
Vegetarian Seared Tofu Fillet: Marinated tofu dusted in rice flour and pan seared and topped with an olive tapenade in a wine and “butter” sauce

House Salad Julia- Baby greens topped with dried cranberries, pears, chevre, and candied pecans with an apple cider vinaigrette

Stuffed Pork Fillet Julia: Pork tenderloin butterflied and stuffed with broccoli rabe, pine nuts, and Calabrian sausage with polenta cake and tomato infused demi glace.
Vegetarian Stuffed Zucchini Medallions: Zucchini rounds stuffed with mushrooms and veggie crumbles roasted with polenta cake and broccoli rabe
Dessert
Orange and Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta- Dark chocolate panna cotta topped with an orange gelee and finished with Kahlua whipped cream and a shortbread cookie

New shows on the eclipse, father-daughter takes on pop culture | |

Finger Lakes Television will run the following new programs in January:
FLX Eclipse 2024: Debra Ross, chair of the Rochester Eclipse Task Force, provides the basics on the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse and opportunities and considerations for the Finger Lakes. The show runs daily through January as follows: Sundays at 3 p.m., Mondays and Tuesdays at 9 a.m., Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m.

ShowBiz Unscripted: Canandaigua middle-schooler Lainie Perri and her dad, Jim, have a new show in which Generation X and Generation Z discuss what's new (and sometimes old) in entertainment and pop culture. In a new episode each month, they discuss the latest on movies, music, television, theatre and more. ShowBiz Unscripted runs at noon on Sundays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays. It is followed by national public access entertainment programming, the Smart Move Show, Sidewalk Entertainment and Paltrocast.

Choral groups welcome new members | |

FLCC's two community choral groups welcome new members in January.
Finger Lakes Chorale
Founded in 1971, Finger Lakes Chorale was led for nearly 30 years by Dr. A. John Walker, Professor Emeritus. During that time, the Chorale hosted numerous instrumentalists and vocal soloists, including a young Renee Fleming, and performed twice in Europe. Chorale rehearsals resume on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., starting Jan. 24 in room 3375 of the main campus. New members are welcome and can sign up on the first night of rehearsal. Finger Lakes Camerata
This select group of about 24 community members and students is chosen annually through audition to perform a cappella works and music for chamber chorus in concerts each semester. Rehearsals are Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Jan. 23 in Room 3375. Anyone interested should contact the director Anthony D'Agostino to set up an audition in January at [email protected].
