Live, Work, Thrive

Your Update & Your Impact

As we start a new year, I'm reflecting on all the great work that happened in 2023. Our success would not be possible without our hardworking team and the generosity of our Board Members, Advisory Council, community partners, volunteers, and donors who believe in our work.

Despite challenges far and close to home, I am hopeful about our work in the coming year. When asked to describe our focus in 2024, "authentic engagement" is at the front of my mind. Our team and leadership will continue to do what our modest-sized, big-impact organization has done so well for 30 years: help year-round residents and small business owners thrive and bring people together to address our community's challenges.

2024 is off to a great start. In addition to our established programs, we are launching new initiatives to increase affordable housing opportunities for everyone living here and we have expanded our training offerings for small business owners.

New Volunteer Leadership & Gratitude for Service

Year-round residents are integral partners in helping achieve the CDP's mission. One of the critical ways individuals help is by volunteering on our Board of Directors and Advisory Council.

The CDP is pleased to announce the newest members of its Board of Directors and Advisory Council and a shift in board leadership in 2024.

  • Steve Cole joined the CDP Board of Directors in 2019 and was elected Chair of the Board of Directors in May of 2022. During his tenure, Steve provided invaluable support, and we will be forever grateful for his contributions, leadership, and commitment to advancing the well-being of our entire community. Please join us in thanking Steve for the vision and perspective he has brought to the organization and for his consistent and thoughtful guidance and support. Please read Steve's inspirational farewell below.

  • We are pleased to announce that the CDP Board of Directors unanimously appointed current board members Carole Ridley as Chair of the Board and Andrew Stern as Vice Chair.

  • The CDP Board of Directors also welcomed two new Board members in November: Fran Schofield and Dr. Anne Sigsbee. Fran and Anne each bring a wealth of experience from their service with local nonprofit and civic organizations, as well as their professional lives. You can learn more about them here.

  • We are also pleased to welcome six individuals newly appointed to the CDP's Advisory Council during the past four months: Emily Achtenberg, Jim Campen, Katie Castagno, William E. Gordon, Lara Henry, and Kevin Lowey.

"The CDP is Remarkable."

by Steve Cole, Immediate Past Chair, CDP Board of Directors

I stepped down on December 31, 2023, as Chair of the Board of Directors of the CDP -- a remarkable organization with an impressive impact on the lives of residents of the Lower and Outer Cape.

I am deeply thankful to the CDP’s staff, its Board members, and its supporters for having given me this opportunity and for making the organization the positive force that it is. There are many reasons for thinking of the CDP as “remarkable.” For me, there are two overriding reasons...

Welcome New Members of the CDP Board of Directors

Fran Schofield a resident of Brewster, moved to Cape Cod in 1990. She is an activist for political and environmental causes and received the “Commonwealth Heroine” award in 2023 for her role with the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative.

“With a laser-focus on Lower and Outer Cape towns, CDP is tackling, head on, two of Cape Cod's most intractable issues: affordable housing and local business development. I am honored to join its board of directors and team of professionals who are working so effectively to build a diverse year-round community of people who can afford to live, work, and thrive in our region.”

Dr. Anne Sigsbee is a retired physician who moved to Cape Cod in 1993 and lives in Orleans. Through working with patients on the Cape, she was inspired to get involved, serving on numerous boards focusing on housing and medical needs. She is a member of the Barnstable County Medical Reserve Corps and the Right Care Alliance and serves on the Orleans Recreation Advisory Committee.

“I am eager to join the CDP Board and act on my conviction that stable housing, quality education, and accessible health care are all interconnected in achieving a sustainable, thriving community."

Housing Matters

Commitment to Sustainable Development & Greening of Affordable Housing

Promoting sustainable, affordable housing development and green practices are a core part of the CDP’s mission. From educating local business owners how to incorporate environmentally sound business practices through the Cape & Islands Green Initiative to supporting and investing in affordable housing that advances efficient, renewable energy practices, we seek to reduce energy use and costs, and be a positive force in addressing the climate crisis.

Supporting Local Businesses

Inspiration Propels Local Artist's Business

Harwich resident and fine arts photographer Andrea Bunar remembers seeing the announcement for the CDP's The Art of Doing Business as a Creative workshop almost a year ago, and it got her thinking, "How can I not take advantage of this?" At the time, Andrea was transitioning to the Cape full-time. Her business was evolving as well. After 25 years as a photographer for families and high school seniors, she felt it was time for something new. Living year-round on the Cape, Andrea saw an opportunity to shift her focus and follow her passion.

After participating in The Art of Doing Business as A Creative workshop, Andrea shared, "Having the opportunity to meet at The 204 with other creatives and learn from one another and experts on the panel was a great experience from start to finish."
