#2.) A Hidden Gem of an Auction
Tiffany Gem-set Jewels in a Tiffany Art Glass Auction
Do you sell Art or Jewelry, ... or is it both?
Gary Roskin -
Roskin Gem News Report -
In the auction titled 'The Doros Collection: The Art Glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany Volume IV: Tiffany's Travel and Exploration,' we discovered, alongside some fantastic glass vases and oil paintings, several pieces of jewelry!
Works such as these necklaces and brooches clearly demonstrate that it's not the rarity of the gem materials, but the beauty of the jewel that makes it so wonderful.
Could this be the reason why Sotheby's placed these in a Tiffany Art Auction.... and not a Jewelry Auction?
Tap here to enjoy close to a dozen Louis Comfort Tiffany jewels, and how much they were appreciated at the auction!

#3.) GIA Enhances it Emerald Reports
Filler Identification now Available upon Request
Oil, Resin, ...
The Details of this New Addition are Here
Gary Roskin - Roskin Gem News Report - GIA Press Release –
It was announced this past week that GIA is adding "filler identification" to emerald reports, upon request.
"Recognizing the industry’s interest in more information about the nature of fillers in emeralds, GIA will offer filler identification with its emerald reports beginning December 15. The optional filler identification service will initially be offered at no cost. "
No, GIA will not identify the actual product, e.g. Opticon, Cedarwood oil, etc.. GIA will identify only the "type" of filler, e.g. oil, resin, etc... - gr
“GIA is making this change in response to the needs of the market,” said Tom Moses, GIA executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer. “As trade concerns about the degree and composition of filler in emerald have evolved, we have adapted our reports to those changes.”
Some professional gemological laboratories have been offering this service for sometime. However, it is well known that identification of the filler, and in particular how much has been used, has always been an enormous challenge for the laboratories. - gr
"GIA offered the identification of fillers in emeralds more than 20 years ago but changed the service to focus on identifying the degree of filler. This was in part due to the recognition that fillers can be removed, changed and mixed." [We have more on that - gr]

Social Unrest in Mozambique | |
Mozambique Govt. Officials, Gemfields, Amidst Social Unrest
Country’s Youth Protesting Mineral Resources
Funding only those in Power
Two Shot Dead at Ruby Mines
Gemfields Cutting Costs to Balance Economic Reality
| |
Having been made aware through several very recent press releases from Gemfields of attacks on MRM property near the ruby mines in northern Mozambique, we closely examined the country’s current political chaos and were once again reminded of an old wound that has not yet healed. (MRM – Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada – 75% owned by Gemfields)
… for Only Those in Power
Clemente Carlos, Mozambique journalist and social activist, speaking to SABC news on December 24th, 2024, notes that the chaos in Mozambique is not just about the contested election results, “this is about service delivery.”
"It’s about the young people coming out and demanding their rights, because they know that all of the mineral resources – which only the rich possess – belongs to the masses. But unfortunately, it’s just a small group who’s benefitting from it.”
Unrest Extends to Montepuez
Deadly use of force kills two – but there are conflicting reports. And IF Carlos is correct, then Gemfields may be in the crosshairs of the unrest. We even look back at the past when deadly force put Gemfields in the cross hairs back in 2015.
Maybe not as it Appears - Where's the Money?
Gemfields notes that “the proceeds of the ruby auction will be fully repatriated to MRM in Mozambique, with all royalties owing to government being paid on the full sales price achieved at the auction.”
This repatriation gives the reader the impression that the Mozambique government is using this money to help its citizens. Yet, as we understand from Clemente Carlos’ report above, the civil unrest may, in part, be due to these funds never actually reaching the hands of the Mozambican people.

Fellows Auction
Princess Louise Brooch - Made of Granite!
| |
We often say that we cover all gem materials here in the Roskin Gem News Report.
But we do not recall ever covering jewelry set with a piece of granite.
And this of course begs the question, why?
On the 21st March 1871, Princess Louise married John Campbell at St. George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle. The marriage marked a significant chapter in British royal history.
While the union appeared to uphold the traditions of the monarchy, it also reflected Louise’s independent and modern spirit. Known for her beauty and elegance, Louise was a favoured daughter of Queen Victoria, often considered one of the most beautiful princesses in Europe.
Long story short, the rock represents where the couple were engaged to be married - near the Scottish home of the royal family, Balmoral.
We were curious as to whether the piece of granite was actually pulled from the wall of the castle, or simply picked up off the ground nearby.

and to see its final auction bid.
