There have been some recent inquiries regarding how to properly service fitness equipment. Many of these items are of high value and if not properly handled, can result in significant and costly damages. The most common items in question are treadmills, elliptical machines, and home gyms.
While we understand some of these items can be shipped whole, especially treadmills that fold, a 3rd party service company should always be requested. Many of these items have mechanical and electrical components, while others are just too bulky and take up much needed space on a tractor trailer. Also, without origin 3rd party approval it is very hard to seek 3rd party services at destination.
The most common occurrence we see is fitness equipment shipped whole, arriving to destination and being too large to fit through a customer's door frame and/or does not fit in the correct room without disassembly. This can be problematic if the residence does not have a garage or indoor area where the item/s can be safely left, and causes unnecessary work and stress on all parties. During peak season it is especially difficult to get a technician out there on the same day, and items end up being left outdoors or brought to the local Destination Agent for storage.
It is imperative that the origin agent note all fitness equipment on the NFC Pre-move Survey Certification form, and should include the make/model of each piece of fitness equipment. If the make/model cannot be located, photos of the item should be taken and sent in with our pre-move survey form. While all 3rd party requests are subject to base approval, our Preapprovals team should attempt these requests to ensure no complications for our haulers/SIT agents ensue during pickup and/or delivery, and the customer receives smooth service throughout their move.
If you are unsure if a piece of fitness equipment qualifies for 3rd party service, it is best to note it on the NFC Pre-move Survey form for our Preapprovals team to review and advise.
