Dear Faculty Member and Colleague:
The Feinberg School of Medicine promotion and tenure process occurs on an annual cycle. Faculty who wish to be considered for academic promotion during the next cycle (2025-2026) will be evaluated by the Department of Pediatrics Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (APT) Committee using the standards described in the NUFSM Information Guide for Appointments, Promotion and Tenure. Upon approval by that Committee and the Department Chair, the candidate will undergo review by the Feinberg School of Medicine Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (APT) Committee, and subsequently by the Dean. Please review the promotion section and relevant attachments on the Promotion & Tenure section at the Feinberg website.
Clinician-Educators and Research/Investigator/Team Scientists who wish to be considered for promotion should review their status and eligibility for promotion with their Division Head/Program Director. In addition, the Department of Pediatrics requires a meeting with a Dept of Pediatrics Office of Faculty Development Lead Advisor prior to submission of an application. Please click here to schedule an advising session with an OFD lead. The deadline to request an advising session is March 15.
Note: Last year, FSM converted the unranked Health System Clinician (HSC) appointment category to a promotable career track. All HSCs now hold the academic rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. Faculty should hold the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor for a minimum of 6 years before promotion to Clinical Associate Professor, and therefore the earliest time to apply for promotion is the 2029-2030 cycle.
To be considered for promotion, please follow these instructions to Prepare Your Packet.
1. Curriculum Vitae - You may create your CV manually, using this template as a guide. You have the option to generate your CV from the Feinberg Faculty Portal, but it will still require some editing to meet the Feinberg CV template criteria.
2. Optional CV Supplements that may be used by faculty on any career track to record and expand upon these activities:
3. Personal Statement - Complete a concise Personal Statement summarizing the highlights of your academic and professional career achievements since your last appointment or promotion, and how these synergize to achieve your goals.
- Should not exceed 3 single-spaced pages.
- Important! Focus on explaining accomplishments since your last promotion (or since your initial appointment, if you now hold your first faculty rank), rather than recounting your entire career.
-
Personal Statement for Clinician-Educators, Team Scientists, and Investigators: use this template to prepare your statement if you are appointed to the clinician-educator, investigator, or team scientist track.
-
Personal Statement for Research Faculty: use this template to prepare your statement if you are appointed to the non-tenure-eligible research track.
4. Record of Teaching and Teaching Evaluations - Teaching is a core mission of FSM and all faculty on the Clinician-Educator, Team Scientist, and Investigator career tracks are expected to demonstrate contributions in this area. Teaching evaluations may be added to the promotion/tenure packet following the Record of Teaching to demonstrate evidence of teaching effectiveness. You may create your Record manually, using this template as a guide. You have the option to generate your Record from the Feinberg Faculty Portal, but it will still require some editing to meet the Feinberg template criteria.
5. Critical References List - Faculty are expected to advance their fields with their work having an impact beyond Northwestern. Identify up to five references since your last promotion in rank (or appointment) that represent your most significant contributions, and explain the impact and consequences of each.
6. Referee List - Referees from a diverse set of geographically dispersed institutions demonstrate the breadth of your reputation. Referees must hold an academic rank equal to or higher than the rank you are requesting. Referees should NOT be contacted directly to solicit your recommendation letter.
7. Letter from Program Leader – this is required for Team Scientists and faculty on the Research Track.
The personal statement and referee list must be prepared manually, but all other elements of the promotion/tenure packet can be produced manually or generated from the Feinberg Faculty Portal, if you have documented your career activity on that site. If you generate from the portal, you will still have to manually edit to match Feinberg templates.
The Dept of Pediatrics Office of Faculty Development has prepared a Checklist for Preparing Your CV, Personal Statement, and Record of Teaching. A poorly prepared package can be cause for not progressing. Submit your packet only after completing every item on this checklist. Non-compliant packets will be returned to the sender for edits and resubmission.
FSM will present an annual Faculty Promotion and Tenure information program in Spring 2025 (TBD). View the slides from the March 2024 session.
All materials must be submitted to the Department of Pediatrics Faculty Affairs Office at pediatrics@luriechildrens.org by Friday, April 18, 2025, along with a copy to your Division Head.
Should you have any questions about the process, please contact pediatrics@luriechildrens.org
Sincerely,
Estella Alonso, MD, Interim Chair, Dept of Pediatrics
Susanna McColley, MD, Co-Chair, APT Committee, Dept of Pediatrics
Paul Schumacker, PhD, Co-Chair, APT Committee, Dept of Pediatrics
