Coconino Workforce Board Engages at 2025 NAWB Forum: Shaping the Future of Workforce Development

The National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Forum, held annually in Washington D.C., serves as the largest U.S. conference dedicated to workforce development. It brings together a diverse group of leaders, including policymakers, business figures, educators, and workforce professionals, to tackle crucial issues and emerging trends in the labor market.

In 2025, the forum, which took place from March 29th to April 1st at the Washington Hilton, and it addressed the ongoing implementation and potential reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), a key piece of legislation guiding workforce development efforts nationwide. Discussions covered strategies for regional collaboration to foster economic growth, innovative approaches to job training and skill development to meet evolving employer needs, and the strategic role of workforce boards in this dynamic landscape. Specific industry challenges and opportunities within sectors like technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing were highlighted. Furthermore, the forum provided a platform to discuss equity and inclusion in workforce programs and the impact of technological advancements on the future of work.

Adding to the significance for the local context, staff and board members from the Coconino County Workforce Development Board were in attendance. Their participation would have allowed them to gain firsthand insights into the current state of workforce board funding at the national level. They would have also been keen to understand the momentum and potential recommendations being considered as part of the WIOA reauthorization process, which is a critical factor in shaping the future of their local and regional workforce development initiatives. Understanding these potential changes and funding outlooks is vital for the Coconino County board to strategically plan and effectively serve the needs of job seekers and employers in their region.

Title III Success Story

A Life Transformed: A True Story from the 2025 Page Stand Down

Shared by Linda Branch, Title III Workforce Supervisor, Workforce Solutions Administration, DES

We were honored to take part in the 2025 Page Stand Down, a vital event connecting veterans with much-needed resources in one central location. The event began with the inspiring presentation of colors by the Veteran Mounted Riders and included the City of Page receiving the “Purple Heart Community Award.”

Among the many meaningful moments, one story stood out. A veteran named Chris visited the ARIZONA@WORK table seeking employment. Our team member, Jennifer Gale, helped enroll him in the Arizona Job Connection system. As they worked, a local community member connected to the Elks Club approached and offered Chris a job—only to learn Chris couldn’t follow up because his phone service was disconnected. Without hesitation, the man gave Chris $100 to restore his phone.

Chris returned the next day, haircut done and phone active, and shared how the stand down changed his life. The day before, he had been in crisis and contemplating suicide. But a phone call, a warm meal, a helping hand, and hope made all the difference.

This powerful moment reminds us why our work matters. Together, we make an impact.
