"‘Ike and Mana‘o: How ancestral wisdom and our own thoughts and ideas impact our mental health and the care that we provide"

Hawaiian ways of thinking and knowing have much to contribute to our work in mental health and healing. We will explore the practices we use to sustain the quality of the care we provide and tackle what to do in the face of these changing and uncertain times. How much do we rely on traditional wisdom and how much do we innovate and throw out the archive of what we know to make room for responding to change? At the opening of this year’s conference, we will set our minds toward taking in what is shared, connecting with one another, and finding new ideas and signs of hope among the presentations and attendees.

"Oppression and Forced Compliance in the Current Political Climate: Resistance, Survivance and Hope"

For many decades, open displays of racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism were considered socially unacceptable and abhorrent by most white Americans who perceived themselves as good, moral, and decent human beings. The current political climate, however, seems to have sanctioned bias and bigotry at the highest levels of government. Public racist and sexist expressions have now become more acceptable and commonplace. Governmental actions have begun dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and even forbidding the use of words like “bias, discrimination, prejudice, race and racism and sex and sexism.” A call for collective action in the form of resistance, survivance and hope offers solutions.
