Bloom into Summer: Highlights, Happenings & Healthy Living

June has been bursting with creativity and connection! We kicked off a brand-new Pop-Up Card DIY Workshop, and it was a hit! Some of our most popular workshops — Make Your Own Marble Silk Scarf and DIY Plant Hanger — were so loved that we're bringing them back for July, so don't miss your chance to join in the fun!

We’re also taking full advantage of the summer vibes with two exciting field trips — one to explore the stunning Rose Garden at Stanley Park, and another for a scenic adventure to Granville Island with a ride on the Aquabus! For caregivers with an artistic flair, our Introduction to Chinese Ink Painting and Watercolor Painting classes are perfect ways to express your inner artist.

Looking to de-stress? Our new "Manage Stress with Mindfulness" workshop series is a must-try. And for those interested in personal growth, don’t miss our Self-Management Seminar — it's all about building strength from within. Love to party? The Summer in the Plaza Party at Minoru Centre this July is the place to be — music, fun, and great company await! And if you’re on a mission to eat well, be sure to check out our Healthy Eating for Seniors Handbook and our helpful Vitamin D & Your Health fact sheet.

There’s something for everyone — let’s make this summer inspiring, creative, and full of joyful moments!

Caregiver Hub Updates

Team-Based Care: A Guide for Family Caregivers as Partners

As a family or friend caregiver, you are an important member of the healthcare team along with doctors, nurses, allied healthcare team members, and the person you are caring for. There are many ways you can participate. Whether it's being present as support or participating in care decisions, how and when you participate will depend on the comfort levels of both you and the person you are caring for. For example, at a medical appointment or during a hospital visit for a care recipient, you may want to speak to the healthcare team about your role and relationship and how you'd like to participate in their care. In other cases, you may simply choose to be present and support the care recipient.

This flipbook is designed for family caregivers who want to:

  • Know how to be a partner in care.
  • Learn strategies to feel comfortable in their role.
  • Know what questions to ask and steps to take in their role as a partner in care

Caregivers' Sharing

Finding Balance When Caring for a Parent

How do you navigate the transition from child to caregiver of a parent while supporting both their dignity and your own wellness?

Caring for an aging or ill parent comes with countless responsibilities, from preparing meals and scheduling medication to attending appointments and much more. While this shift to caregiver is, in some ways, a natural progression, it also requires you to navigate into a new relationship with your parent. As such, you need to learn how to balance respect and consent for their desires with your own health and happiness.

Roma Palmer is a registered clinical counsellor who not only helps parental caregivers but also fills this role herself, first with her mother years ago and now with her father. Today, she shares what she’s discovered through her work and firsthand experience juggling family, career, and caregiving.

Learn from Roma’s thoughtful and proactive approach that keeps respect and love in focus throughout this shifting relationship:

  • Practices that prioritize the care recipient’s continued sense of identity at this tumultuous time
  • The importance of involving your parent and family members in the caregiving decision process
  • Tools for fending off isolation and scheduling breaks to take care of yourself
  • How to ensure the division of caregiving labour is distributed openly and fairly
