Navigating Your Care Recipient’s Rights: Power of Attorney and Representation Agreements Explained

Any adult who is mentally capable can authorize a trusted person to deal with their financial and legal matters by signing a Power of Attorney. That adult can also authorize a trusted person to act on their behalf in relation to health and personal care matters by signing a Section 9 Representation Agreement (we refer to it as an RA-7). A Power of Attorney is the gold standard for authority over financial and legal matters and an RA-9 is the gold standard for power over health care and personal care matters

But what if a person has cognitive difficulties due to an accident or injury, is getting on in years, or has trouble understanding information or making decisions on their own for some other reason? Although this is precisely the situation where a person would need a representative, they may not be able to meet the capacity requirements to make a Power of Attorney or an RA-9.

Advanced Care Planning for Caregivers

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a way for you to think, talk and plan for health care that is right for you before a crisis happens.

ACP has been shown to reduce the anxiety and distress that can accompany living with serious illness, frailty and end of life for both the person with the illness and the family caregiver. Not only do people with illness report a better quality of living and greater satisfaction with care by engaging in their advance care planning, but families report a piece of mind and a decrease in caregiver stress.

In this webinar, Pat Porterfield RN, MSN encourages you to have a conversation on what Advance Care Planning is, why it is important for you and the loved one you are caring for and the steps involved. Pat was involved in the development of advance care planning within Vancouver Coastal Health and since retirement has continued with public education for advance care planning and co-chairs the BC Centre for Palliative Care Advance Care Planning Public Awareness and Education Working Group.

Musical Threatre: Seniors Take On Things We Never Talk About

Through a unique blend of humour, music, and heartfelt storytelling, this production explores aging stereotypes, elder abuse, and the power of connection—challenging societal perceptions while celebrating the strength, resilience, and wisdom of seniors.

These performances aim to amplify the voices, experiences, and wisdom of immigrant seniors. By addressing elder abuse, ageing stereotypes, and the importance of social connection, we hope to spark meaningful conversations and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our senior community.
