April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Together, We Can Build Safer Communities

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)—a time to uplift survivors, raise public awareness, and commit to ending sexual violence in all its forms. At Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND), we stand alongside survivors, advocates, and our incredible partners at the North Dakota Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition (NDDSVC) (formerly CAWS North Dakota), as we work to create communities rooted in dignity, equity, and safety.

Veteran's Success Story

When a U.S. Army veteran living in small town North Dakota learned his home was set for a sheriff’s auction—despite making on time monthly payments—he turned to Legal Services of North Dakota (LSND) for help. LSND quickly uncovered that his mortgage had been sold twice, leaving his payments unaccounted for. With just weeks to spare, LSND’s Veterans Staff Attorney negotiated with the mortgage company and took a "squeaky wheel" approach—calling multiple times a day to push for a resolution. Six days before the auction, their persistence paid off: the veteran’s mortgage modification was approved, saving his home. Thanks to LSND and the Veterans Homelessness Grant, he avoided displacement and secured his future.
