2025 REI Innovation Fellow Featured in Fiber for Breakfast Podcast

Jon Willow, the MSU EDA University Center for Regional Economic Innovation (REI) 2025 Innovation Fellow and co-founder of the Community Broadband Action Network (CBAN), was recently featured on the Fiber for Breakfast podcast hosted by Fiber Broadband Association CEO Gary Bolton. The conversation focused on Michigan’s persistent digital divide, where approximately 30% of households—about 730,000—face barriers to broadband access. These barriers extend beyond infrastructure to include affordability and digital literacy challenges. Willow emphasized that Michigan’s strategy to address these issues hinges on coordinated, cross-sector efforts, acknowledging

that no single organization can solve such complex challenges alone.

As REI’s 2025 Innovation Fellow, Willow highlighted her current research which investigates how artificial intelligence can enhance collaboration among organizations working to close the digital divide. Her work suggests that AI tools can improve information sharing, streamline communication, and reduce duplication across initiatives—making multi-agency efforts more effective and efficient. The discussion underscored the importance of infrastructure in ensuring equitable access to broadband, especially for underserved communities across the state.

Willow’s Innovation Fellowship with REI reflects her commitment to advancing digital equity and her leadership in the broadband space. Through her work with CBAN and her REI Innovation Fellowship, she is developing practical tools and frameworks that empower communities to collaborate more strategically. Her fellowship will further REI’s mission to support innovative, community-driven approaches to regional economic development in low-income communities.
