2025 Senior Assessment “Freeze” Exemption Filing
Overview:
The Low-Income Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze renewal letters have been mailed. Applications can be completed online through the Lake County website, Assessor.lakecountyil.gov or simply stop into our office with your income 2024 Federal 1040.
Benefits:
The Senior Freeze Exemption is essentially a stabilizing factor added to the assessment portion of your tax bill. While the tax rate is still subject to change each year, the “Freeze” exemption stabilizes your property’s Taxable Assessed Value.
Requirements:
Property ownership and primary residency on the property for two consecutive January 1st’
Owners must be at least 65 years old
Total household income must be less than $65,000
Needed paperwork:
Government-Issued ID
2024 Federal Income Tax Return, including all 1040 schedules & attachments
Trust documentation (if applicable)

Stop by your local assessor’s office--no appointment needed--or fill out at home by going to Assessor.lakecountyil.gov and clicking the “Smartfile E-Filing Portal”
Note: The additional letter regarding Delinquent Taxes is simply an optional extra notice for any unpaid property tax bills. It does not require action unless you would like an additional person to receive a copy of any delinquent tax notices.
