I don't know about you, but my summer is zipping by. While I do have some vacation coming up, so far my summer has resembled the action of Brad Pitt's new movie, F1. While it's all been fun, I feel a little like I'm white knuckling it into the turns at 200 mph, pressed into my seat by the pace of change.

In addition to the gratifying process of working with you on your financial lives, Junah and I are exploring new tools and technologies to better serve you - from enhanced market analysis to more efficient portfolio management. I'm also deep into interviews after reviewing more than 50 applications for our new Financial Planner Associate position.

We hope you enjoy this month's newsletter, which covers the remarkable market resilience we've seen despite significant headwinds. We're also working on a special issue focusing on recent tax legislation impacts - keep your eyes on your inbox and let us know how we can be of service.

2025 YTD: Viewer Discretion Advised

(Contains market volatility, political turmoil, trade disruptions, geopolitical conflict, and brief scenes of currency weakness)

Markets Reach New Heights Despite Growing Uncertainty

From record highs to sharp pullbacks, the first half of 2025 has been an eventful journey for markets. After hitting an all-time high of 6,204.95 in late June, the S&P 500 continued climbing in July, reaching 6,290.22 on July 10th—marking a 10.7% gain year-to-date despite significant headwinds.

The standout story remains artificial intelligence, with Nvidia becoming the first company to reach $4 trillion market capitalization on July 9th. Yet beneath the surface, market breadth tells a more nuanced story: while 36 S&P 500 stocks hit new 52-week highs, the median stock remains more than 10% below its peak, highlighting the continued concentration in mega-cap technology names.

JPMorgan Chase exemplified financial sector strength, beating expectations with EPS of $5.24 versus $4.48 expected, driven by a 14% jump in fixed income trading revenue. Banks have benefited from higher rates and robust trading activity, though they're expressing caution about future guidance given trade policy uncertainty.

Federal Reserve Stays Patient Amid Inflation Concerns

The Federal Reserve maintained rates at 4.25-4.50%, with Chair Powell confirming the Fed would have cut rates by now if not for tariff-related inflation concerns. June inflation data showed CPI at 2.7% and core CPI at 2.9%—both above the Fed's 2% target. Markets expect the first rate cut in September or October, pricing in two cuts by year-end.

Economic data presented mixed signals: 147,000 jobs added in June exceeded expectations, while unemployment improved to 4.1%. However, manufacturing contracted for the fourth consecutive month, and retail sales momentum slowed despite 3.3% year-over-year growth.

Geopolitical Shocks and Currency Turmoil

The Middle East experienced its most significant conflict escalation in years with the "Twelve-Day War" between Israel and Iran from June 13-24. Oil markets reacted sharply, with Brent crude surging to $78.50 during peak tensions before settling at $67.17 following the ceasefire.

Perhaps more significantly, the U.S. dollar suffered its worst first-half performance since 1973, falling 8.04% year-to-date. Trade policy uncertainty, with average U.S. tariff rates reaching 17.6%—the highest since 1934—has created significant currency volatility. Gold benefited from dollar weakness, reaching record highs of $3,315.58 per ounce, up 22.9% year-to-date.

Looking Ahead: Navigating Uncertainty with Long-Term Focus

While headlines focus on trade tensions, geopolitical conflicts, and policy uncertainty, it's worth remembering that markets have demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout this period of change. Yes, volatility has increased and risks are real—particularly with the August 1st tariff deadline approaching. But rather than getting caught up in the daily noise, successful investors maintain their focus on long-term fundamentals: strong corporate earnings, technological innovation, and the economy's underlying adaptability.

As we've seen repeatedly throughout history, markets eventually look through short-term disruptions to focus on longer-term value creation. The key is staying disciplined, diversified, and focused on your goals rather than trying to time these unpredictable swings.

The rise of the "Everyday Millionaire" (EMILLI)

A new segment of wealth holders is quietly reshaping the financial world: the Everyday Millionaire, or EMILLI. These are individuals with $1 million to $5 million in investable assets, not quite ultra high net worth but undeniably influential.

A Quiet Boom: EMILLIs by the Numbers

  • 52 million EMILLIs worldwide, up from just 13.27 million in 2000, marking a fourfold increase in under 25 years
  • 18 percent growth since 2019, highlighting their rapid expansion in recent years
  • $107 trillion in combined wealth, a total that has more than quadrupled since 2000 and rivals that of ultra wealthy individuals

Fueled by real estate appreciation, strong market returns, and favorable currency trends, EMILLIs now represent one of the most powerful and fastest-growing wealth segments worldwide.

Despite their financial strength, many EMILLIs remain underserved and face increasingly complex financial challenges. Taking a proactive approach to financial planning is essential. Here are a few practical tips whether you're an EMILLI or have aspirations to join their ranks:

  • Create a holistic financial plan: Build a long-term roadmap that includes retirement, estate planning, and multigenerational wealth strategies.
  • Maximize tax efficiency: Utilize smart strategies like capital gains planning, Roth conversions, and trusts to reduce your tax burden.
  • Protect your portfolio: Avoid overconcentration in a single asset class by maintaining a well-balanced, diversified portfolio aligned with your risk tolerance and long-term goals because concentration risk has derailed more millionaires than market crashes.

The EMILLI revolution is accelerating, and those who embrace strategic planning now will be best positioned to not just preserve their wealth, but to build lasting legacies.

Junah's Corner: Wealth vs. Income

Within the wealth space, the terms wealth and income are often used interchangeably, a mistake I made myself when entering the finance world. In reality, they are significantly different and understanding that distinction is crucial for long-term financial success.

What’s the difference?

  • Income refers to the money you earn on a regular basis, typically through salaries, wages, bonuses, or business profits. In simple terms, it represents your cash flow, the funds coming in to support your daily expenses and lifestyle.
  • Wealth, on the other hand, is the total value of your assets minus your liabilities. Wealth is often built through assets like property, investments, and businesses.

While income shows your earning power, wealth reflects your financial stability and freedom.

Why does it matter?

Many people with high incomes struggle to build wealth if spending and debt grow alongside their paychecks. Meanwhile, others with more modest incomes can become millionaires over time by consistently saving and investing.

Focusing solely on income can lead to short-term thinking. True financial health comes from growing and protecting your net worth, consistently building your wealth over time.
