Our hearts are with the people of California as they endure unimaginable loss and devastation. While we work toward building momentum for a better future, we also pause to recognize the grief and challenges faced by those rebuilding their lives. Our strength as a community lies in how we come together during times of need. If you’re able, please consider contributing to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund, which focuses on helping underserved communities, including the disabled, farmworkers, and Native American populations.

A Gentle Giant of Democracy: Honoring President Jimmy Carter
President Jimmy Carter’s passing marks the loss of a leader who embodied integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
From his humble beginnings in Plains, Georgia, to his transformative presidency and tireless humanitarian efforts with Habitat for Humanity, he represented the very best of American values.
He showed us that authentic leadership is rooted in empathy, service, and the courage to stand up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.
As Democrats, we carry forward his legacy—not just in remembrance but through action—championing human rights, social justice, and a world guided by kindness and decency.
Rest in peace, President Carter. Your extraordinary light will continue to inspire us all.

Upcoming Legislative Session: Key Issues to Watch
As the South Carolina General Assembly convenes on January 14, 2025, several significant legislative initiatives are poised for debate:
- Abortion Legislation: Following the implementation of a six-week abortion ban, further restrictions are anticipated. The S.C. Freedom Caucus advocates for a complete ban, citing constitutional rights to life.
- Cultural and Educational Policies: Proposals to limit or eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in state colleges are expected. Additionally, bipartisan support is growing for enhanced penalties for hate crimes, aiming to address and deter acts of hate-fueled violence.
These developments emphasize the turbulent and potentially disruptive nature of the forthcoming legislative session. Engaged citizens must remain informed and actively participate in the legislative process. For comprehensive coverage, please see the Statehouse Report.

Momentum: Honoring the Past, Building the Future
As we step into a new year and prepare for the next chapter of American leadership, one word rises above the noise: momentum. It's the force that propels us forward, shaped by the leaders who came before and carried by those who refuse to stand still.
President Biden's tenure was defined by steady, determined momentum—leading our country through crises with empathy and action. From historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy to expanding healthcare access and restoring international alliances, Biden's leadership was a reminder that real progress comes from persistence, not spectacle.
At the same time, we pause to honor President Jimmy Carter's extraordinary life and legacy. Carter remains a beacon of humility, integrity, and tireless service. Whether brokering peace in the Middle East or swinging a hammer with Habitat for Humanity, Carter exemplified leadership built on compassion, selflessness, and a relentless commitment to doing good.
In sharp contrast stands Donald Trump—a figure whose presidency stalled momentum, replacing progress with division, self-interest, and chaos. Where Biden and Carter built bridges, Trump burned them. Where they led with character, he led with grievance. The difference isn't just in style—it's in outcomes.
As we honor Carter's extraordinary legacy and reflect on Biden's steadfast leadership, we must carry their spirit forward into the battles ahead. Let's build on their momentum by showing up, speaking out, and staying engaged—because progress doesn't happen by accident.
This year, let's honor our past while driving toward our future, keeping our momentum strong and our purpose clear.
