2026: Proper Reweigh Procedures

PPSOs/JPPSOs are placing increased attention on compliance with HHG reweigh requirements. Please review the requirements below and ensure all drivers and hauling personnel understand and follow the proper reweigh procedures.

Important Reweigh Requirement

A reweigh cannot be performed using the same scale location used to obtain the shipment’s origin weight. The reweigh must be completed using a different scale location.

For example, if the origin gross and tare weights were obtained at Scale A, the reweigh cannot be performed at Scale A. The reweigh must be completed at a different scale location.

When is a Reweigh Required

There are 2 types of reweighs; Customer/PPSO requested, and Automatic.

  • Customer/PPSO requested reweighs utilize preapproval item code 4A and/or 4B. The applicable agent receives an approval email from NFC notifying that a reweigh has been authorized on a shipment. When a hauler receives this item code approval, a reweigh must be performed regardless if the shipment meets the auto-reweigh requirements.
  • Automatic reweighs do not require preapproval item code 4A and/or 4B approval. Instead they follow specific thresholds based on the following criteria:
  1. All shipments for Pay Grades E-6 thru O-10, and DoW Civilians, with a weight of 7,000 lbs. or greater must be reweighed.
  2. All shipments for Pay Grades E-1 thru E-5, with a weight of 4,000 lbs. or greater must be reweighed.

Exception: Reweighs on HHG shipments weighing less than 1000 lbs. are not authorized.

Proper Reweighing Procedure

  • Hauler must conduct the reweigh before the actual commencement of unloading of the shipment for delivery or placement into storage.
  • Upon request, hauler must provide the customer and the responsible PPSO the time and specific location for each weighing to allow either party the opportunity to witness the reweigh. For this reason, haulers should perform the reweigh as close to destination as possible.
  • Most importantly, the reweigh cannot be performed at the same scale location used for the origin weight.

We are seeing instances where haulers obtain the origin gross weight at one scale location and the origin tare weight at a second scale location, then attempt to use one of those same locations for the reweigh. This is especially common on door-to-door/intrastate shipments, but unfortunately is not allowed per the 400NG.

To avoid this issue, whenever possible, obtain both the origin gross and tare weights at the same scale location. This preserves a second scale location that can be used for the required reweigh.

  • For containerized HHG (code2/Agent Crate), haulers can reweigh using a “new gross weight” and the “origin tare weight”. However, that new gross weight must be obtained from a different scale location.
  • Timely reweigh weight submission into the DPS system is a TOS requirement. All reweigh tickets should be emailed to our Reweigh Team within 4 GBDs. reweigh@nationalforwarding.com.

It is important to understand that failure to properly complete a required reweigh can result in an automatic 30-day suspension for the TSP. The impact extends beyond the individual shipment—a suspension reduces the number of shipments awarded to us, which ultimately means fewer shipment opportunities for our entire network.

We appreciate your compliance on this matter. Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any questions or concerns.
