New Medicaid work requirements

Harvard's Center for Health Law & Policy Innovation (CHLPI) recently published a new Medicaid work requirements explainer that highlights the impact of this new law on public health and implementation choices at the state level. The new explainer breaks down:

  • The rules: How individuals can comply with the new requirements and who qualifies for statutory exemptions.
  • The public health impact: How these requirements may affect communicable disease response, including for HIV and hepatitis C.
  • State decisions: The critical implementation choices that will determine how easily people can navigate these changes.

New vaccine research

Researchers at MIT and the Scripps Research Institute have now developed a vaccine that generates a significant population of rare precursor B cells that are capable of evolving to produce broadly neutralizing antibodies. Expanding these cells is the first step toward a successful HIV vaccine.

JANAC: What's New

Nurse Led PrEP in Ugandan SRH Clinics: Feasible, acceptable, and youth friendly

The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care recently published a new article on nurse led PrEP delivery in Uganda, showing how shifting PrEP initiation and follow up to nurses in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) clinics can reduce stigma barriers and reach adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).

Investigators in Uganda integrated nurse delivered PrEP into a public SRH clinic to meet AGYW where they already seek care. Among 59 AGYW (median age 22) at Kawaala Health Centre IV (Dec 2021–Jul 2022), retention was 83% at 1 month, 63% at 3 months, and 41% at 6 months; self reported good adherence (≤3 missed pills) was 69% at 1 month, 45% at 3 months, and 71% at 6 months. Initiation visits averaged ~95 minutes, reflecting comprehensive counseling and start up processes. These findings indicate nurse led PrEP in SRH settings is feasible and acceptable, supporting task sharing to expand prevention options for AGYW in high burden settings.
