President

Greetings American Legion Family!

December started off busy and hasn’t slowed down. I took a couple of Honorary Junior Department Officers with me to the FT Dodge VA Gift Shop. It was a rewarding experience watching the girls visit with the very appreciative veterans! Next on the agenda was Operation North Pole where 204 children received gifts and visited Santa. The junior girls helped at the Auxiliary tables where we gave out cookies, water, and various Christmas goodies. Our cookie decorating table was a big hit along with the Christmas Wheel Table. The following week we had our Department Christmas Party where the Hutchinson Legion Family did a wonderful job hosting.  It was a festive time with a gift exchange and live music from a band comprised of deaf members. All the events were successful in my book and the smiles and grateful words that were to many to count that came from the kids and the veterans made all that driving worth it!

Ø  OFFICERS AND CHAIRMEN At all Levels Don’t let your 2026 dues become Delinquent! Members in these positions can’t hold them in 2026 if you are not a member in good standing. While sending out Unit Assessments fees to the units it was noticeable that a lot of Unit officers have not renewed for 2026 yet. Don’t let your membership expire!! Members not in good standing should not be holding any officer or chairmen positions.

Ø  MEMBERSHIP Review your unit’s membership to ensure accuracy of who has paid and for what years. Reach out to your District Membership and Department Membership Chair Trish Ward and myself if you need any help! Contact us if you have any unresolved membership issues so we can get them fixed before the end of the year.

Ø  ALAMIS Department Treasurer Jeanne Hass sent out forms by email.  IF your unit hasn’t received anything about renewing or updating your ALAMIS access for 2026, please contact her immediately.

Ø  Volunteer Hours: Units need to send in their Impact Forms to their District President by January 31st. District President’s need to send in their combined Impact Form to the Department President.

With the New Year comes new Natural Disasters

American Legion Auxiliary Stands Strong with Communities After Natural Disasters

After a natural disaster, communities around Kansas often demonstrate extraordinary resilience and strength in the face of unimaginable challenges. Ice Storms, tornadoes, wildfires, and floods can strike with little warning, leaving behind widespread devastation. Homes may be destroyed, livelihoods disrupted, and families forced to begin the complex recovery process.

In these moments of uncertainty, the American Legion Auxiliary remains a steadfast source of support for individuals and families impacted by natural disasters. Whether through the immediate compassion and assistance of local unit members or through financial relief provided by the Auxiliary Emergency Fund, the Auxiliary is committed to helping survivors rebuild and regain stability.

The Kansas Emergency Fund offers critical assistance to members and their families who have suffered losses in the wake of disaster. These grants help cover essential needs and provide relief during some of the most challenging times survivors may face.

Auxiliary members and friends play an essential role in sustaining this mission. Continued support of the Auxiliary Emergency Fund ensures that help is available when disaster strikes. Donations to the fund directly impact those in need and allow the American Legion Auxiliary to respond swiftly and effectively.

Together, through generosity and service, the American Legion Auxiliary stands ready to bring hope, relief, and support to communities when it is needed most.

I am challenging all Districts, Units, and individuals to make a $10, $15, or $25 contribution to our Kansas Emergency Fund to support our Kansas Members in need.  Click the link for the following forms for your contribution https://www.kansasala.org/program-forms or when you mail your check to the Department of Kansas office, in the “Memo” line, identify – “KS Emergency Fund Contribution.”

Email me to let me know if you contribute, and at the end of the year, I will make sure you receive a Certificate for your District and/or Unit.  “Let's all make a Difference!”

Whew!!! The holidays are over and the reset to normal schedules begins. We get to carry all the happy memories from family gatherings and holiday parties with friends into the new year with us. The kids are headed back to regular hours at school or back to college for the spring semester, some are headed back to work after holiday vacations, and Wal-Mart is back to normal for all of your shopping needs! I hope you have the overwhelming feeling of peace and remember moments with smiles and maybe even a few laughs as you pack up those Holiday decorations.

Now it’s time to take those feelings of peace and happiness to pour into your unit and/or district prayer books. Remember, there are no rules for a prayer book, it can include prayers, songs, poems, quotes, or anything else that brings uplifting feelings to you or members of your unit/district. Let your creativity run wild as your put this book together!

I am working on a prayer book for the Department of Kansas. I would love to include items your unit/district share with me. If each district would submit a few items gathered from the units I would be eternally grateful. You can send those items to me via mail, email, or bring them to upcoming events.

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments; please feel free to reach out to me via phone or email. Please come say Hi at Mid-Winter in Dodge City coming up at the end of January!

As we prepare for the holiday season, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and New Year.  This is a time for family and friends to get together and share family traditions and stories.  Enjoy this time and pass on your family history.  Write family stories down for the next generation.

When the new year starts it will be time to write up what your unit has done in 2025. I look forward to getting your end of year report and learning all the exciting activities that volunteers did.

History Flashback

The 12 days of Christmas starts on the 25th.

“Santa Claus evolved from the historical Saint Nicholas, a generous 4th-century bishop in Turkey, blending with European folklore figures like Holland's Sinterklaas and England's Father Christmas, eventually becoming the jolly, red-suited gift-giver known today through influential 19th-century poems (like "A Visit from St. Nicholas") and 20th-century advertising (like Coca-Cola's campaigns).

1. The Saintly Origins (Saint Nicholas)

Who: Born around 280 AD in modern Turkey, Saint Nicholas was known for secret gift-giving, famously saving three impoverished sisters from slavery by tossing gold coins to provide dowries.

Legacy: His feast day (December 6th) became a tradition for giving gifts, with children leaving shoes or stockings for treats.

2. European Transformations

Sinterklaas (Netherlands): Became a beloved saint who magically entered homes to leave gifts, evolving with darker figures like Krampus to punish naughty children.

Father Christmas (England): Initially a symbol of feasting and merriment, he later adopted gift-giving roles as Christmas became child-focused.

Reformation Impact: The Protestant Reformation suppressed saints, leading to figures like Germany's Christkind (Christ Child) taking over gift-giving duties.

3. Americanization & Modern Image

Dutch Influence: Dutch settlers brought Sinterklaas to America, where "Sinterklaas" became "Santa Claus".

"A Visit from St. Nicholas" (1823): This anonymous poem (later claimed by Clement Clarke Moore) described Santa as a chubby, jolly elf with a sleigh and eight reindeer, solidifying key modern traits.

Victorian Era: Father Christmas merged with the American Santa, adopting the red suit and chimney-sliding, becoming a beloved symbol for the new child-centric Christmas.

Coca-Cola's Role (1930s): Illustrator Haddon Sundblom's iconic red-suited, jolly Santa for Coca-Cola ads cemented the popular image we recognize today.

In essence: Santa Claus is a blend of historical saintly charity, European folklore, and American cultural storytelling, culminating in a global icon of Christmas generosity.”

Things were busy in December for unit # 26, in District 3. On December 7th the legion and sons of America legion hosted the 33rd annual Widows of veteran dinner. There were 36 Widows present they were severed a turkey/ham dinner with choice of homemade pie, Christmas music along with some pokes dancing, and each was gifted a poinsettia plant.

On December 13th was the annual children’s Christmas party sponsored by the Legion, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Toys for Tots.  Over 100 community kids were present. Enjoying Santa and his elves, and the Grinch. Each child received a treat bag with candy and fruit, a gift bag with two gifts, and a chance to win a bike in their age group.  We divide the children into 5 age groups, and gender, one bike is given to each gender in each age group.  After Santa leaves the families enjoy hotdogs, chips and sodas.

The Veterans at Winfield VA home enjoyed Christmas Shopping at the homes Christmas shop, sponsored by District 3 American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
