Some of the best advise that I ever received was from my dearly departed grandma, Leota Mae (Murphy) Powell. This advice was given to my mother, and being a little girl, I overheard although it didn’t make much sense to me at the time. It wasn’t until years later that I began to understand the true wisdom in this advice.
A little background, my mother at the time was a homemaker, taking care of the home and caring for small children. My father would often ask her to ride with him to go to Payless Cashways. For everyone not born in the 70’s-80’s, it was the Home Depot before Home Depot was a thing. Most of the time, my mom would decline to go with him because there was laundry to do, kitchens to clean, and children things that had to be done. My dad’s mom, my grandma Mae, pulled my mom aside and asked her why she was refusing the invitation from her husband to ride with him. Mom gave all the normal responses to which my grandmother stopped her. She said, “The dishes will always be there, there will always be laundry to do, and the kids will all have things that need to happen. Those things are not going anywhere. However, if you keep refusing your husband when he asks you to go with him, to spend time with him, then there will come a day where he will quit asking.”
Here is the message in this. I have been asked why I am attending this or that as they are Legion Functions, Riders Functions, or SAL Functions. The simple answer is, I was invited. For our Department Legion Family to start to rebuild shaky bridges and start closing the gaps between the entities we need to be open to attending, participating in, and contributing to those things in which we are included. Start inviting the leaders of the other entities to your Auxiliary functions and accept the invitations where they are asking you to attend and/or participate. It will surprise you the connections and closeness that will be gained at your Post Home, District Family and Department Family.
If they invite you or include you….. Go!
