Jean Huntley is Retiring

As sad as we are to see her go, we are happy for her new adventure.

The 21 Central District would like to invite you to participate in a card shower for Jean Huntley. She has served out of the Kinsley K-State Research and Extension Office as the Office Professional for over 37 years. Some of you may have interacted with her through a cheerful "hello" over the phone or had a personal relationship with her through your years in 4-H or as a friend of Extension. Nonetheless, I'm sure your interaction was pleasant! Jean has been a great asset to our local extension programs, and we want to show her how much we appreciate her. Please join us in wishing her a Happy Retirement by sending her a lovely card.

Jean's last day is Friday, May 10, 2024. Address the letters to Jean Huntley and send them to 212 East 6th, Kinsley, KS 67547.

If you have any family or friends interested in sending her a card, please share this invite with them. Thank you, and we hope you join us in making her feel special! ❤️

AGRICULTURAL NEWS

With the huge success of a 4th Grade Ag Day in Stafford County this past September, we are excited to host one in Edwards County on April 24th in conjunction with Edwards County Conservation District and NRCS. We have presenters and sponsors lined up for an entire morning, teaching the county’s 4th graders about many different facets of the agriculture industry.

Do you have a 14 or 15-year-old who plans to help a farmer this summer? May 4th in Great Bend and May 29th in Cimarron are both tractor safety training courses our ag agent is helping with and can provide transportation to. Please contact Baley for more information: baley@ksu.edu, 620-549-3502

The St. John Farm and Art Market will start up again on Thursday evenings in June! If you are interested in being a vendor please call or stop by the St. John office to get an application and information sheet.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY WELLNESS NEWS

Seniors Living Well Series:

The March Class at Kinsley Senior Center discussed how technology can make our lives easier and ways we can use technology safely. Common scams and hacks were highlighted as well as tools to secure our accounts, tips for creating secure passwords, and ways to find our passwords when we need them.

Art and Mind:

In March, a fun group of women gathered to create art journals at the Nora Larabee Memorial Library. Art journaling uses color, images, and targeted questions to process and express thoughts and emotions that might be difficult to identify in traditional ways. Participants are encouraged to let go of perfection or thoughts of “I’m not artistic.”, and instead relax into the process of mixing color, finding images that have meaning, and allowing our minds to think productively. Look for more of these classes to be offered in Edwards and Stafford Counties soon!

NEW Office Professional – Kinsley Office

We’re excited to welcome Cassie Sanko, our new office professional in the Kinsley office, who will join our team starting April 1st. Cassie brings with her an impressive 19 years of experience from the Kansas State Research and Extension Office in Ford County.

During her tenure at KSRE, Cassie has demonstrated exceptional dedication and expertise in various areas, including monthly financials, record keeping, advertising, and helping with the 4-H youth. Her extensive background makes her a valuable addition to our team, and we’re thrilled to welcome her aboard.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Cassie Sanko as she embarks on this new chapter with us. We’re excited to have her on board and can’t wait to see her positive impact on our office and community.

Be sure to stop in and say hello.

CHALLAH BREAD

1 ¾ Cups warm water

1 ½ T active dry yeast

½ cup sugar

½ cup oil

4 large eggs, plus 1 beaten for egg wash

1 T salt

7- 8 ½ cups flour

Pour water and yeast into the mixing bowl. Stir in the oil and 4 beaten eggs. Add 1 cup flour and mix well. Add the sugar and salt. Gradually add the flour until a soft dough forms. It should be slightly sticky but not messy sticky. You might not need the full 8 ½ cups of flour. The dough should have the texture of a marshmallow. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface, just enough to keep it from sticking. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.   Turn dough into a lightly greased bowl and let rise until doubled. Dough can be refrigerated.
