INCARCERATION IN VIRGINIA

The Commonwealth of Virginia has an incarceration rate of 779 per 100,000 people, meaning that it locks up a higher percentage of its residents than many other states. Today we will take a deep dive into the multitude of policies that keep Virginians tied up in the criminal justice system at an alarming rate. From pre-trial holdings to probation, and disturbing occurrences within the juvenile system, the Commonwealth has a serious criminal justice issue that needs to be addressed.

Over 69,000 of Virginia's residents are locked-up in various facilities. View these infographics to see how many Virginians are incarcerated in each region.
Nationwide, an estimated 7.1% of youth in juvenile facilities reported being sexually victimized. Read this article, which finds that 5.1% of youth in detention in Virginia reported sexual victimization.
