STORIES THAT MATTER

“Grandpa Young”

Linda Lattiemore

I received a call from a distraught 82-year-old man who I will refer to as “Grandpa Young.” He appeared a little disoriented in describing the nature of his problem. Grandpa Young went on to explain to me that the electricity had been shut off and he felt vulnerable and scared. He stated that he owed something like $82 on his bill but did not go into any details as to why he didn’t pay his bill.

I asked him if there were any family members he could call on to get assistance with his bill and he stated that there was not. He was all alone. I asked Mr. Young if he had any medical conditions that he was currently being treated for by a physician, and he stated that he did. I went on to explain to him about the medical certification option provided by A.E.P.

Mr. Young seemed very relieved knowing that his service could be turned back on after following the instructions I provided to him. He was a little confused about his doctor’s name at first, but eventually recalled his doctor’s name. I did a Google search to get the number of the doctors office and provided this information to him. I also provided him with the phone number for A.E.P. I instructed him to first contact his doctor’s office and get their fax number, then he would call A.E.P. and tell them that he would like to apply for the medical certification and provide them with his doctor’s fax number. He appeared more confident, and eager to accomplish the task. I instructed him to call me back once he completed the task.

Mr. Young called me back about an hour later and stated that the electricity had been turned back on. He was so elated and so was I. He did not stop thanking me for helping him.
