Insider Issue #102

Buckle up, Buttercup.

Normally this newsletter includes a few different articles combined with event news, announcements, and an ad or two.

This time, I was writing what I planned to be a very short observation, and it quickly turned into an epic non-fiction piece requiring my full focus.

Hi, I'm Ann. You can send your hate mail to: beheard@podiatrymeetings.com

23,000 Subscribers. But what’s the open rate?

1998 called and it wants its marketing back.

PM News boasts approximately 16,000 DPM subscribers. Podiatric News (Barry Block’s new gig) claims more than 23,000 subscribers. Impressive numbers, right? Especially when APMA members total only 10,880 in 2026.

But subscriber counts don't tell the whole story.

Disclaimer: this is my personal, likely controversial, opinion. It’s what I’m known for. I invite you to reply with your opinion. Maybe I’m the one living under a rock?

I subscribe to both publications from multiple email addresses (I'm sure I'm not the only offender). I have inbox rules that automatically send them to separate folders, which I occasionally browse when curiosity strikes.

Recently, I spent about ten minutes scrolling through roughly 15 issues of these publications. Is anyone paying attention to these emails? Keep reading...

...The layout looks like something that was created using Lotus Notes or Microsoft Publisher. The content leans heavily toward industry gossip, grievances, and predictions of impending doom. The CTAs cite a fax number. The ads are the worst part. It’s 2026, there is no excuse for an ad to be low-res and pixelated.

As a supporter of using various marketing channels, I've purchased advertising in these publications on behalf of clients.

In some of those ad campaigns, I've seen click counts ranging from zero to three - from a distribution list of 16,000 - 23,000?! Did you sign up for recurring ads and forget you’re still paying?

I’d rather send an email to 950 people who actually open and engage (click, reply - and not bot clicks!) than to 23,000 email addresses with a 12% open rate.

To be fair, longevity and loyal readership have value. These publications have built audiences that advertisers want to reach. But a big mailing list isn't a free pass to stop improving the experience.

As an advertiser, if you’re only asking about the number of email addresses on the list, you’re part of the problem.

Now, I'm not suggesting clicks are the only measure of advertising effectiveness. I've written extensively about how marketing is an art, not a science. Brand awareness matters. Repetition matters. Being visible matters...

OUR CLAIM TO FAME

Every Podiatry Conference. One Calendar.

November 2026

December 2026

January 2027

...The actual thing that caught my eye and the real topic of this rant is this: I saw surprisingly little evidence of AI-generated design or modern creative approaches.

On one hand, thank goodness. We don't need another anatomically questionable AI foot with seven toes or a flyer that has 2000 words with skid mark underlines and 17 different fonts. I hate them too.

On the other hand, it’s an indicator of how slow our industry is to adopt change and new technology. That tells me that we’re not just ignoring AI, we’re burying our heads in the sand.

And this isn't just about two publications.

It's about all of us. Conference organizers who recycle the same spreadsheets, processes, and promotional materials year after year. Vendors running the same tired product ads designed in Microsoft Paint and using ACT as their rolodex and marketing software. Practices relying on outdated websites with a headshot from 1985 and wondering why new patients aren't calling.

Old is not bad. Old is wise, respected.

Doing it the same way you’ve always done it is naive...

FINAL THOUGHTS

...We spend a remarkable amount of time worrying about how the rest of medicine perceives podiatry. We debate titles, scope, education, and whether we’re getting the respect we deserve.

Every outdated website, unreadable advertisement, and uninspired conference contributes to our image.

We can’t demand that the world see podiatry as a modern profession while presenting ourselves like we’re stuck in another decade.

We all know the data. Fewer students in podiatry programs. Fewer physicians choosing private practice.

If we want podiatry to grow, attract younger physicians, and remain relevant, we need to start questioning the way we've always done things.

I live and breathe the podiatry industry. I’m not the enemy. No, I’m not a physician, but I am someone who loves the people and the passion here. We can do better.
