On Friday, May 16, our students participated in the 23rd Annual Walkathon, celebrating the "The Sounds of Philadelphia: Musical Firsts & Legendary Musicians" in support of Saint Mary Interparochial School Art, Music and Language Studies!
The Walkathon route began at Old Saint Joseph's Church with a blessing and took our students to Broad Street, along the stretch known as the Avenue of the Arts, to explore musical firsts and legendary musicians in Philadelphia. These sights included:
- Gamble & Huff Walk, in honor of the founders of Philadelphia International Records
- Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, home of the Philadelphia Orchestra
- Banners celebrating Philadelphia Jazz Month
- The Wilma Theater and The Miller Theater
- Academy of Music, home of Opera Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Ballet
- Philadelphia Music Alliance “Walk of Fame” Plaques
- Musical Fund Hall, Philadelphia's first concert hall
Our students, teachers, and volunteers then made their way back to the Magnolia Garden adjacent to our school, where they were greeted by a musical surprise - members from the South Philadelphia String Band!
Thank you to the SEPTA Safety Team who ensured a safe Walkathon route and to Paws the SEPTA mascot who surprised students in Washington Square where they stopped for group photos with our Walkathon sponsor banner.
A special thank you to our more than 100 parent volunteers, faculty, staff, and Walkathon Planning Committee for making this a memorable day for our students.
