September is Dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows

The Church honors Our Lady of Sorrows throughout the month of September, with the feast day being September 15.

The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows meditates on the seven sorrows of Mary, as foretold by Simeon the prophet at the Presentation of Jesus:

"And a sword will pierce through your own soul also, that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2:35).

There are many ways to participate in this devotion, though the most prominent is the Seven Sorrows Rosary—prayed by saying seven Hail Mary's for seven mysteries (one for each sword of sorrow). Learn more about the history of this rosary and pray it here.

Cardinal to Celebrate Mass for the Ladies of Charity

The Ladies of Charity (LCUSA) will have their National Assembly "Choose Hope" closing Mass at the Cathedral on Saturday, September 13, at the 5:30pm Vigil Mass. Cardinal Wilton Gregory will be the celebrant of this Mass. All are welcome!

Learn more about the LCUSA and the National Assembly here.

Bishop Evelio's Labor Day Homily

The Catholic Standard reviewed Auxiliary Bishop Evelio Menjivar's Labor Day homily, noting his overall theme, "the dignity of workers." The article is an insightful piece that highlights Evelio's emphasis on the impact machines are making in the workforce, as well as his passion for human dignity. Read the full article here.

Selection from Fr. Joe:

St. Andrew of Crete on the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8)

"The present festival, the birth of the Mother of God, is the prelude, while the final act is the fore-ordained union of the Word with flesh. Today the Virgin is born, tended and formed and prepared for her role as Mother of God, who is the universal King of the ages.

Justly, then, do we celebrate this mystery since it signifies for us a double grace. We are led toward the truth, and we are led away from our condition of slavery to the letter of the law. How can this be? Darkness yields before the coming of the light, and grace exchanges legalism for freedom. But midway between the two stands today’s mystery, at the frontier where types and symbols give way to reality, and the old is replaced by the new.

Therefore, let all creation sing and dance and unite to make worthy contribution to the celebration of this day. Let there be one common festival for saints in heaven and men on earth. Let everything, mundane things and those above, join in festive celebration. Today this created world is raised to the dignity of a holy place for him who made all things. The creature is newly prepared to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator."

Mass for the Solemnity of St. Matthew the Apostle

On Sunday, September 21, we will celebrate the patronal feast of our parish, The Solemnity of St. Matthew the Apostle. We will have our regular schedule of Masses, but the 11am Mass will be bilingual. Monsignor Jameson will be the principal celebrant and Fr. Isaac will be the homilist. The wonderful Schola Cantorum will be back for another year of great music. We hope you can join us in celebrating our titular feast!

Canonizations of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, Pope Leo XIV will canonize Blesseds Carlo Acutis (left) and Pier Giorgio Frassati (right). These modern day holy men have inspired the faith of many due to their zeal for the Catholic Church.

For more information on each saint-to-be, check out this page.

World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly

Sunday, September 7, 2025

“Blessed are those who have not lost hope.” This scripture passage from Sirach 14:2 proclaims hope in the Lord as the companion for those who grow in relationship with God as they grow older in years. Grandparents are cherished members of our family. They offer wisdom and love, and they share their faith and tell stories of God’s merciful presence in their lives. We thank God for their example and ask that he bless them with happiness and good health.

There will be a special blessing for grandparents after the intercessions.

Learn more about this day here!

The Way Retreat

Jubilee Cross & Jubilee Prayer

At St. Matthew’s Cathedral, the cross in the sanctuary has been specially designated as the Jubilee Cross for the Jubilee 2025 Pilgrims of Hope. This sacred cross serves as a symbol of Christ’s love and the hope that guides us through this Jubilee Year. It stands as a focal point for our community, inviting pilgrims to reflect on the significance of this special time of grace and renewal. Next to the cross, the Jubilee Cross Prayer is displayed, providing a spiritual guide for all who come to pray and reflect. We invite you to visit the Jubilee Cross in the sanctuary, where you can recite the Jubilee Cross Prayer or take a moment for personal reflection. You may read the Jubilee Cross Prayer HERE and/or the Jubilee Prayer by Pope Francis HERE. La oración de la Cruz Jubilar en español se puede encontrar AQUÍ.

Paddling on the Anacostia River

The St. Matthew’s Creation Care Green Team will celebrate the Season of Creation with an evening of paddling on the beautiful Anacostia River. A river guide from the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) will lead us on a scenic educational tour. The Anacostia has changed dramatically over the last 400 years – from a place of quiet natural abundance and American Indian settlements to a colonial seaport and bustling corridor in the nation’s capital. Exploring the Anacostia River by paddling offers a way to get to know the river and its resources.

We will leave from the canoe landing at Bladensburg Waterfront Park (4601 Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg, MD 20710) at 10am. Register here!
