Being a coach is the most satisfying and enlightening profession you can ever have.
It’s a career of passion and privilege. You help change people’s lives and make them happier and you get paid handsomely for it too. How cool is that?
Here are some of the things that make a great coach. Is this you?
- First and foremost a genuine desire to help others.
- A great capacity for empathy and compassion.
- The ability to never assume but to ask.
- To be curious - not dogmatic and advice giving.
- A desire to make a real difference in the world.
- The wisdom to know you don’t have the answers but then helping the client find their own.
- Being able to put your own ego to one side and be completely of service to others.
- The skill of knowing how to ask the right questions.
- Not being scared of holding a place of silence and healing for someone else.
- Great eye contact.
- Not dishing out “shoulds”, “oughts” or advice. Coaches don’t give advice.
- Knowing it doesn’t help to absorb someone’s pain (and feeling overwhelmed by it) but knowing you are a neutral, helpful place for the client to learn.
- Laser listening.
- Believing in people and wanting the best for them.
- Believing in yourself as a coach and a game changer.
- Modelling health, wellbeing, confidence and authority.
- Being able to build trust quickly and easily.
- Going in deeper than the problem or issue presented. Looking for what lies beneath.
- A calm and non-judgmental countenance.
- A desire to do something with real meaning and purpose.
- An interest in the limitless potential of the human condition and in turn wanting to reach your own potential.
- Believing that we can create amazing lives by changing our mindset and actions.
- Wanting to get the very best out of the journey of life and wanting others to too.
- Having a non-judgmental, open mind
