Celebrating 25 Years of the

Van Evera Bailey Fellowship

July 28, 2026

2026 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Van Evera Bailey (VEB) Fellowship! The VEB Fellowship is an opportunity for professionals in the field to examine not only what they think, but how they think. Fellows are provided time for creativity, reflection, and a pursuit of deeper understanding of ideas that result in lasting value to the applicant, the profession, and the greater community.

Since 2001, AFO has partnered with The Van Evera and Janet M. Bailey Fund of Oregon Community Foundation in awarding the annual VEB Fellowship to advance the professional development of design and building professionals and encourage greater contributions to their profession and community. Fellows now receive $50,000 for their year-long project, and AFO has supported 27 Fellowships.

Over the past 25 years, professionals in Oregon’s built environment have expanded their knowledge and practice through a myriad of projects. Fellows have traveled extensively internationally, dived deep into the rich cultural history of the PNW region, and provided invaluable insights into their findings to the public.

We invite you to celebrate this anniversary with us by exploring our past Fellows and staying tuned for opportunities to learn more throughout the year. Please join us in extending congratulations to the many individuals who have impacted the built environment though this Fellowship!

AFO believes that design should consider diverse points of view, and reflect these views, in a built environment that provides access and equity for all. Our two fellowship opportunities, the Van Evera Bailey Fellowship and the Pat Sanchez Women’s Fellowship, exist to inspire design and building professionals to deepen their understanding of design’s role in creating an Oregon where everyone can thrive.

Applications open August 1 with an October 25 deadline. Learn more and get ready to submit a proposal!

Explore a Van Evera Bailey Masterpiece

Join us for a Dine & Design event exploring a masterpiece by the late architect, Van Evera Bailey.

Tour this striking home designed by the Fellowship's namesake in 1962. Built for the Pfahl family, the home was created with maximized viewing of the distant mountains in mind, utilizing careful siting and window placement. On the outside, it is surrounded by the terraced work of Barbara Fealy, a renowned mid-century landscape architect who worked closely with many architects of Northwest Regional Modernism. Tour this Northwest gem and enjoy drinks and hors d'oeuvres with owners Mike and Mac.
