Ad Fontes Academy
25th Anniversary Fountain Newsletter
November 2020 Issue
Hello friends of Ad Fontes,

I am excited to share some of our in-person school activities from the past month. While we are limited on what we can do during COVID, we are working creatively to keep as many AFA traditions going as possible whether in athletics, chapel, science or history.

We are in full swing of our 2021-22 Admissions season with a December 18 early enrollment deadline. Please share the Fountain, the Open House link, and the Kindergarten tour video and testimonial to any interested families.

Ad Fontes' Growing Deeper Roots Campaign has kicked off to fund our current in-person extra costs and to strengthen AFA financially to actively pursue our own property in 2021. We would love for you to help us meet our $250k goal by the end of the year.

Thank you for your support!
Dean Luckenbaugh
President, Ad Fontes Academy

Check out and share our Giving Tuesday (tomorrow, December 1st) videos on the AFA Facebook page to support our in-person learning program!
AFA In-Person School Activities
Upper School Rube Goldberg Machines
Our Physical Science students in the Upper School recently presented their Rube Goldberg machines. Each machine had to accomplish a specific task of the student's choice - tasks included pouring water into a cup, popping a balloon, and saving a lego man from drowning. Each student had to use at least six simple machines, raw materials, and two classes of levers. Students spent the past month and a half in class designing, building, and troubleshooting their machines. The recent presentation was the culmination of all their hard work and we were impressed!
Lower School Chapel
Mr. Arrick runs our Thursday morning Lower School chapel program (currently broadcasted into each classroom). But recently, Martin Luther stepped in to discuss his life and Reformation Day. This month we've also been discussing "Thanksliving" - because Thanksgiving is not just a day, it's a lifestyle.
First Grade Egyptian Feast
Our first graders know how to dress for the occasion! There were great costumes and so many fun activities at the Egyptian Feast thanks to AFA's incredible parents.
Second Grade Simple Machines
Some of our resident scientists (the second graders) have begun a science unit on simple machines. It started off with a scavenger hunt and will finish with the students giving their own presentations.
Sixth Grade State Presentations
Our sixth grade students did a fantastic job putting together presentations on different U.S. states!
New Staff Introductions
We welcome Paul Cameron as our new Upper School Aide. Mr. Cameron is our Upper School basketball coach, has a background in business marketing, and a passion for education, sports and Christian discipleship. We are excited to have him join our staff in this new role!
AFA Athletics
We have been excited to continue with outdoor athletic training for basketball, tennis, and cross country this fall despite our competitive sports seasons being canceled. In addition to the updates below, AFA Basketball Coach Paul Cameron had 15 students in Grades 6-12 for socially distanced basketball training.
Cross Country and Running Club News
Our Cross Country and Running Clubs had 38 runners for their fall session and are beginning their winter session! This month several parents participated in a season-end 5K Fun Run with their Running Club students.
In our recent Cross Country meet, Dakota H. placed first in the Middle School Girls portion, and our Middle School team placed 5th overall! Also ... it might have been a little muddy!
Tennis Clubs
Our Upper School and Lower School Tennis Clubs had 19 participants at Chantilly Country Club this fall.
AFA Alumni Updates
Emilie (2002), Memphis, TN: I work as a Nurse Practitioner at a clinic called Christ Community Health services. I am currently working with their school-based clinic in the Memphis city Schools. I am guardian over 7 year-old Alex in the picture, and his older teenage cousins previously lived with me but graduated from high school in 2019. I love teaching and often have students with me at work and teach at my church in the young adult Sunday school class.

AFA Kindergarten Testimonial
"When people ask us why we send our children to Ad Fontes, I have so many wonderful reasons that I can't usually get them all out in one conversation. Most people think I do it out of fear and want to shelter them from life. But that's not it. It's about intentionally pouring life-giving truths into their hungry spirits every day."
