Ad Fontes Academy
25th Anniversary Fountain Newsletter
October 2020 Issue
Dear AFA Family and Friends,

We are very excited to share with you that Ad Fontes continues to meet in-person, strengthening our Christian community and student learning while implementing practices to maximize community health. We have worked hard to offer our typical school programs with some creative twists. Our students have been resilient and risen to the challenge!

We are also kicking off our 2020-21 Growing Deeper Roots Campaign and our 2021-22 Virtual Open House season. Please help us share these opportunities to get connected to Ad Fontes.

We hope you enjoy a few of AFA’s October highlights!

Soli Deo Gloria,

AFA In-Person School Activities
Upper School Fall House Event
The Houses of Ad Fontes were not going to let the pandemic stop the joy of the house competition season. The first on-campus event of the year was a unique competition in which students went on a scavenger hunt for items needed during the pandemic, decorated face masks in the styles of their houses, and built a hand-sanitizer slingshot. Students and faculty alike enjoyed seeing members of the houses demonstrate incredible spirit. Romans were dressed as gladiators and the Iliumites had their own house scent for the competition (it was only slightly oppressive). Ultimately, House Rome was victorious, but everyone enjoyed the chance to come together as a community and enjoy a day of friendly competition.
Christmas in October
For our kindergartners’ study of Germany they learned that German children don’t hang stockings at Christmas, they put their shoes outside the door instead. Our youngest students practiced this tradition and discovered a little Christmas magic in October. Sounds like “hands on learning” we can all get excited about!
PE with a Flair
Our PE classes have been working on jump rope skills. Watch this clip to see some of the ladies from the 6th grade show us how it’s done!
The Sentence Jingle
What do AFA kindergarteners learn? Jingles! Jingles help our students commit important facts to memory easily.
One of the jingles our kindergarteners have already learned this year is The Sentence Jingle. Here’s an at-home recitation so you too can learn the 5 simple rules!

Hobbit Feast
Last week our 5th grade students embraced their study of Tolkien’s The Hobbit with a Hobbit Feast! There was eating, eating and more eating all day, with quests and challenges as well. The morning weather was perfect for Gandalf’s big photo shoot.
Student Recognition
National History Bee
Earlier this month, AFA students Nathan (8th) and Matthew (6th) participated in the Regionals section of the National History Bee, and advanced to Nationals! When Matthew’s match came down to a tiebreaker question to make the Regional playoffs, he answered correctly because of his 3rd grade project on Benedict Arnold. Matthew ended up with the highest score of the Virginia students for his level and 5th place overall for his level. Well done!

Community Support News
Grandparent Prayer Initiatives
On the first Saturday of September 2016, these five Ad Fontes grandparents began a monthly meeting at Jireh coffee shop in Centreville to pray for Ad Fontes. They now begin their fifth year of gathering to bring all Ad Fontes praises and needs to the Lord. These grandparents are part of a larger AFA Grandparent prayer team that includes 22 families in 11 states. We give thanks for our faithful grandparents loving our school through prayer. It bears rich fruit in the lives of our students.

Growing Deeper Roots Campaign Kick-Off - $250,000 Goal
As we celebrate our school’s 25th anniversary this year, we look back with gratitude to the leaders who birthed and nurtured Ad Fontes while also looking forward to our Future Vision. This year, Ad Fontes’ creative COVID response has revealed the deep roots we have as a Christ-centered community with an academic program of the utmost excellence and grace that develops mature leaders, critical thinkers, and skilled communicators and has brought us a record enrollment of 218 students.

This has brought us to a Defining Moment that will put Ad Fontes on solid financial footing so that in 2021 we can begin working towards the goal of purchasing our own property. We have recently launched the Growing Deeper Roots Campaign with the goal of raising $250,000 by June 2021. We have already raised near $110,000! Please consider joining us in fulfilling this goal!
Thank you for reading our newsletter, The Fountain! We hope we have provided content that gives you a deeper connection not only to the mission of AFA, but also to the people that make up this great school community!
