EAST 31ST AVENUE BREAKS GROUND

Construction to build the new east-west connection at 31st Avenue is underway. In September, crews began to lower the eastern portion of the road between S. Delaware and the tracks, relocating pipes and excavating. Major progress was made on the western portion from the tracks to El Camino, with retaining walls already installed.

28TH AVENUE PROGRESS

The new street connection at 28th Avenue is almost complete! People will soon be able to travel seamlessly between east and west, safely separated from the train tracks. Crews are readying for the final stages of construction, with paving, paint, and landscaping anticipated before the winter holidays (weather permitting).

Once the 28th Avenue street connection is open, work will move to E. 25th Avenue for the final lowering of the road between Palm Avenue and S. Delaware Street. Stay tuned for more details.

NEW HILLSDALE STATION TO OPEN

WINTER/SPRING 2021

This past spring, the Caltrain Hillsdale Station temporarily closed to allow for construction of the new track alignment, the lowering of 28th Avenue, and the building of the new station. Due to COVID-19 and the pandemic's impact on the project supply chain, the new station is now anticipated to open winter/spring 2021, dependent on labor and materials. Despite this, crews were able to pour the stairs and ramps, install lights and handrailing, and start on sidewalk installation.

Project Background

Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at East 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities.
