Responding to Student Behavior and Crisis Situations in the Age of COVID and Social Unrest

The 2nd Annual School Health NJ Virtual Summit will be held on February 23rd (9am-12pm) featuring LEGAL ONE. This free blended learning event will include completion of 2 hours of online courses and a live, virtual training via Zoom. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students is our number one priority as school officials and staff. Doing this has become exponentially harder over the past year, as we have scrambled to respond and adapt to a global pandemic and world events that have shaken the very foundations of our society, from systemic racial injustice, to massive economic upheaval, to the recent attacks on our core democratic institutions. This blended learning provides a perfect opportunity for teams of school leaders, educators, counselors and other school personnel to come together to ensure that we are able to effectively understand and respond to crisis situations in the remote setting, address challenging student behaviors caused or made worse by our uncertain world and proactively identify students in need of comprehensive supports to address their underlying social, emotional and physical safety needs.  Keynote Speakers David Nash, Esq., LEGAL ONE Director Gary Vermeire; FEA Consultant (formerly responsible for overseeing Student Support Services for NJDOE) John Worthington, Esq., LEGAL ONE Consultant (formerly NJDOE Director of the Office of Special Education)

Summit Overview Properly supervising students who are participating remotely Responding to suspected student use of alcohol and controlled substances   Identifying and addressing potential child abuse and neglect Ensuring proper information sharing and coordination among key school personnel, students and parents Establishing expectations for student behavior and speech in the virtual setting Identifying and responding to social and emotional needs of students in the aftermath of recent world events Using the I & RS team and IEP teams to proactively plan for and support students in the remote setting; and identifying those policies, protocols and practices that must be revised in light of the pandemic and recent world events

Director of LEGAL ONE Mr. Nash currently serves as Director of LEGAL ONE (Law, Ethics, Governance for All Leaders, including an Overview of New and Emerging issues) at the Foundation for Educational Administration. LEGAL ONE is an innovative program that provides school law professional development for school leaders and other educators.

*Prerequisites: In advance of the live training on February 23rd 2021, participants will complete 2 hours of online courses. The first hour will review legal requirements related to the duty of supervision for students in the remote setting, including when mandatory reporting requirements must be followed. The second hour will provide an overview of the role of the Intervention and Referral Service teams in the age of COVID. Participants will also be provided with scenarios to consider in advance of the live training.
