"A Day in the Life" CTE Summer Enrichment Course for Grades 3-5
During the Summer 2017, our 3rd-5th grade students had the opportunity to learn about about careers and practice important job skills. 337 students engaged in the 4-week course; each week focused on a different California industry sector: Engineering & Architecture, Information & Communication Technologies, Health Science & Medical Technology, and Education, Child Development, & Family Services. The primary goal of the course was to promote critical thinking, skilled communication, collaboration, and problem solving skills.
This is part of our ongoing effort to increase 21st Century skills in alignment with our
Graduate Profile.

CTE Advisory Chair, Mike Schwan
|
When I was asked to chair the CTE Advisory Committee, it would have been easy to say, 'I don't have time.' I work in the building automation business 60-plus hours per week. But I said 'Yes!, because I love giving back since I have been blessed with such a wonderful career.' I also remember my years in shop class in eighth and ninth grades - those two years have paid massive dividends to me over the last fifty years.
Let me tell you why I am still here. First, the College and Career Readiness team I work with are unbelievable. They are so dedicated to giving students the greatest opportunities and so appreciative of us in the private sector who devote time to help. Rarely have I seen such appreciative people who understand how vital it is that we do this together. Second, volunteering time to organizations is something I have always enjoyed. I share this goal with Fresno Unified: Give students in our community a chance to be educated in areas that produce great living wages and opportunities. When visiting different schools, I am completely uplifted by what I see and hear from students. The enthusiasm and enjoyment for what they are learning are awesome.
As our CTE Advisory Committee moves forward, a major goal is to keep growing internships, externships and job shadowing opportunities with companies all over our city. We are going to work very hard to make this a seamless process and show students what Career Readiness really is.

Teacher Externships
Several CTE teachers chose to use a portion of their summer to immerse themselves in industry sectors related to courses they teach. This allowed them to obtain relevant knowledge, current trends, necessary skills and certification while networking with business professionals.
Tamela Ryatt, Sunnyside Digital Photography and Marketing teacher, worked with several companies related to photography and production. While working with Windsong Production and the JSA agency, she was able to assist with an EECU commercial featuring the Carr brothers. When asked if she would participate in future externships, Tamela replied, "Absolutely! It was good to make connections and see all of the latest equipment in use."
