Second Grade April and May 2022
Dear Second Grade Families,

Please find our academics highlighted below with some photos of what we've been up to at the end!
Flex Work
We had a busy two months researching water, culminating in the creation of our class podcast. We took one excursion to habitat with our Mass Audubon guide, where we learned about vernal pools and how some creatures need vernal pools for them to be able to survive. Students also received a visit from a Mass Audubon Guide to the school. The guide taught us more about vernal pools and brought in some creatures from the pool for us to learn more about. Students have become inquisitive explorers of water and have done an amazing job with their podcasts.
Reading
In reading in April and May, we have learned about problems and solutions, identifying problems that characters face, and which steps they take to resolve those problems. We have also been reading across books in a series to see if characters grow through books, if they tackle their problems the same way, or learn from previous problems and change their strategies.

When reading at home together you can ask:
  • What do you think might happen next?
  • Who are the characters? What do you know about them?
  • What problems did the characters face? How do they solve them?
  • What lesson did the character learn?
  • How is this book similar to other books that you've read?

We also completed an Author study in reading. Each child got to pick an author and learn all about the author, including the books they wrote, their backgrounds, and interesting facts.
Writing
In Writing, we focused on writing our scripts, bringing together everything we have learned this year about research, sentence structure, inviting your audience into your work, and communicating important ideas clearly.
This was our only collaborative writing piece this year, and it was so fun to watch as each student brought their expertise into this writing activity and supported their classmates in writing stronger and longer writing pieces.
Math
In Math in April and May, we have been busy!

We've covered the following topics:
  • Using our expertise in odd and even numbers to support multiplication and division
  • Recognizing division as the opposite of multiplication
  • Multiplying by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10
  • Multiplying in any order (commutative property)
  • Using multiplication facts to solve division problems
  • Reading and writing time
  • Recognizing AM and PM
  • Recognizing Bills
  • Recognizing Coins
  • Adding Money up to $1
  • Comparing Money amounts using subtraction
  • Lines and Surfaces
  • Flat Shapes (2D)
  • Solid Shapes (3D)
Science and Social Studies
In Science, we completed our research into water with experiments about erosions and landslides, and surface tension. We also completed our study of water with research into some amazingly interesting topics, including how water waste treatment plants function.

In Social Studies, we finished up our study of world changers and reflected on how there were so many people we studied, from so many diverse backgrounds and situations, and how their actions in history are still impacting us today.
