This January and February, the Presbytery of East Tennessee is hosting a virtual/in-person Bible study of Genesis. Each week, participants will gather in person at 3:00 p.m. at a Presbyterian Church near them. (2nd Pres is one of the hosts.)

Rev. Dr. Wendy Neff will lead the study from a different location each week. Participants may also join via Zoom from home each week if they prefer. The remaining dates are January 22, 29, February 5, and 12.

CALLING PRAGMATIC PRESBYTERIANS!

Are you concerned about poverty in America? Are you tired of newscasts and lectures about people in need that offer no quantifiable solutions? If you want to take a proactive approach to help those less fortunate, this study group is for you.

We meet on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in the church library. We hope you will join Kathy Duggan, Angela Jones, and Janis Smith as we take pragmatic first steps to end poverty in America. We will base our work on the book Evicted by Harvard socio-economist Matthew Desmond, which paints a vivid picture of poverty that can be understood even by the most affluent. The difference between Desmond’s book and others like it is that he offers viable solutions for solving social problems.

Although we will read and discuss the book first, this is not a book study but a call to action. To reserve a copy of the book or if you need transportation, contact Kathy Duggan at 865-441-8683 or [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS LIST CHANGES MONTHLY TO REFLECT CURRENT NEEDS? [

Feel free to contact Bonnie in the church office at [email protected] or (865)523.2189 if you would like to drop off items at the church.

Thank you for your generosity!

This month (JANUARY), the FISH Pantry mission is in special need of the following household and personal items:

  • BAR SOAP
  • TOOTHPASTE
  • SHAMPOO (NO CONDITIONER)
  • DISH SOAP (SMALL CONTAINERS)
  • TOILET PAPER

Our once-a-month FISH team receives phone call requests for food and these additional items; they are sorted, packed, and delivered to each client's household.

All donations should be newly purchased; any quantities would be greatly appreciated.

WE ASK YOU TO NOT DONATE FOOD, (other than for pets).

Also, note that we have plenty of deodorants at this time, so we do not need more at this moment.

BUDGET SUSTAINABILITY TASK FORCE

At its November stated meeting, your Session charged the Budget and Finance Committee to establish a Budget Sustainability Task Force “to plan for how to achieve budget sustainability in the future” and to select task force members.

Those task force members are:

Matt Casey

[email protected]

Ileen Cheek (Vice Chari)

[email protected]

Joe Clark

[email protected]

Dick Dodson

[email protected]

Kathy Duggan

[email protected]

Becca Kite

[email protected]

Tim Wright (Chair)

[email protected]

While it’s simple to say, “increase income and reduce expenses” to achieve budget sustainability, the challenge is figuring out how to do that. Please help the task force members by sharing your thoughts and suggestions. Your input is not only welcomed but needed! Thank you!

The Family of Harriet Campbell, Leilla White, Sue Jacox, Kennedy Wilson, Jerry Young, Arlys Milligan, Beverli White, and Peter Douglas Hamilton.

On the Pastoral Care page of our website, we will share more specific updates regarding those on our prayer list. It will be updated frequently by the church staff.

Please get in touch with the Church Office with prayer concerns to be listed in the weekly email or bulletin ([email protected], 865.523.2189)

Names remain on the prayer list for 4 weeks unless requested by the individual or a close family member of the individual to keep them on longer.
