#26 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2022
First Drop "Mother's Milk" 2020 Shiraz

"A wonderful, plushly fruited Barossa shiraz" - WS Top 100 for 2022 #26
To all Artisans,

Our team worked nonstop to secure as many of Wine Spectator's list of the Top 100 Wines of 2022 as we could. We're proud to have 33 of the wines and counting! Check the collection every day this week for the new additions as they're confirmed.

Today we offer up #26 - we're receiving only 60 bottles of this deliciously drinkable Aussie Shiraz, perfect for warming up as the weather turns! (Australia is on a roll, garnering 5 spots on the famed Top 100 list this year!)

Founded in 2004 by winemaker Matt Gant - a 25+ vintage veteran with tours of duty in Spain, Italy, Portugal, USA, New Zealand, not to mention his time at Australia's famous St. Hallett, where he was voted Young Winemaker of the Year - First Drop First Drop is based at the ‘Home of the Brave’ winery in Nuriootpa (Barossa Valley, South Australia). Matt describes their winemaking philosophy as “A sensibility for tradition with a passion for innovation.” Sourcing fruit from vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa, this plush, elegant Shiraz has huge aromatics of dark cherries and blackberries. Fine tannins and cedar notes are added with 12 months aging sur lie in 3 and 4 year old French oak hogsheads. Fresh and vibrant, this has the structure to suggest it has a lot of great drinking in front of it and should show well over the next 5 plus years quite easily - but you'll probably want to enjoy it right away!

Don't miss this one, it's perfect for the coming holiday meals, and quite limited.

Cheers,
—James Tran

Barossa Valley, South Australia

94 Points, Top 100 Values - James Suckling:
"This has plenty of intense, rich blackberries and dark plums, as well as some earthy notes, violet-like florals and blueberries. Dark spices, too. The palate has plush and richly fruited style with some handy depth to the tannins, which carry bold flavors. Fine yet rich tannins here. This is such a good all-round Barossa shiraz. Drink or hold."

94 Points - James Halliday:
"A wonderful, plushly fruited Barossa shiraz packed full of vibrant satsuma plum and juicy blueberry characters, underscored by hints of maraschino cherry, Asian spice, violets, turned earth, roasting meats and a nuance of softly spoken oak. There's depth of fruit and intensity here, but also a sense of sapid juiciness with ripe, fine, sandy chocolatey tannins adding ample support. The wine fans out with a plume of spiced plum fruits on the finish. Wonderful value." (3/2022)

92 Points, #26 Top 100 of 2022 - Wine Spectator:
"There’s a lot to admire in this complex, juicy red, which offers polished tannins and a core of fresh cherry and açaí berry flavors highlighted by notes of dried rose petal, sandalwood, salted dark chocolate and fresh tobacco. A hint of white pepper and a firming, malty Assam black tea hint lingers on the finish. Drink now through 2032." (5/2022)
