Bowling Down Main Street March 29

Not every town closes a street to let kids bowl, but Harbor Springs does! On Saturday, March 29, from noon to 2 p.m., kids of all ages will be able to, quite literally, bowl down Main Street*. It all started as a joke about how Main Street is typically not too busy in this shoulder season, and it continues every year around April Fools Day. Join in the fun, whether it’s rain, shine, snow, wind, summer-like temps - you name it, the Harbor Springs Chamber will be there, at the intersection of State and Main, next to Johan's Pastry Shop.

In addition to bowling, check out these fun and mostly free features for the kids:

  • Get a FREE hot chocolate and donut for the kids at Johan's
  • Northern Lights Recreation will be giving away a FREE bowling card to all participants.
  • Rocking Horse Toy Co. will be giving away a FREEbie!
  • Harbor Springs Lyric Theatre will be showing Peter Rabbit for 25 cents at 10 a.m.
  • Great Start Parent Coalition will give away FREE books to all children at their information table.
  • Little Traverse Bay Humane Society will also be attending with some adoptable pets.

We're Celebrating Women in Business in March

Let's celebrate chamber-member businesses that are owned or managed by women! We've got fwomen chamber-members profiled this week. Watch each week during the month of March as we showcase more community leaders.

If you know a chamber member who you’d like to see featured in our Women’s Business Month spotlight, please email your suggestion to Bonnie Kulp, director@harborspringschamber.com

Dori Steckley

The Fast Help Foundation, Inc, Director/Chairman

Helping and inspiring as many people as we can reach in our small way. From emergencies to quick, easy uplifting activities - like our newest effort, a "coffee bank". Free coffee for anyone who can use a lift! Check out the details on our website. We continue our original mission of honoring the memory of my parents, John C. and Dorothy R. Benson, we are a charitable foundation providing small, instant grants to local people who have suffered a life altering event.

People who struggle bravely to meet everyday needs and who get knocked down through no fault of their own and, yet, who are strong enough to ask for help. These are "my people" and I do what I can to relieve the situation. I am inspired every day by their spirit, strength and determination,

My advice is Be inspired and lifted by what you choose to spend your valuable time on. You are so much more capable than you realize. When you love what you do, it is no longer "work"! If you don't give it a shot, you may always wonder if you would have realized your dream.

Dr. Jane Millar

Northern Community Mediation, Executive Director

When people come to mediation, generally speaking they are experiencing some form of a crisis in their lives, such as a divorce, distribution of an estate, neighborhood problem. With the guidance of a mediator, to see the disputants work out their differences and come up with an agreement that reflects a win/win rather than a win/lose solution for the involved parties is a testimonial to the value of mediation, a process which is less expensive and emotionally draining than litigation.

I am inspired by life itself. I am in awe of the world around me. The very fact that I wake up in the morning and have the opportunity to make a difference in my own small way gives me purpose. I get high on the flight of a bird and on the invention of the airplane. I think the birth of a child is miraculous. The solitude of nature and the possibilities of the unknown beyond the universe excite me. And, most of all, I believe that in the long run good overcomes evil.

The question to ask is “Am I being considerate and respectful of others?” With this as a guideline, your actions will reflect how you treat others. How you treat others has a direct correlation to how others perceive you. When you acknowledge other people’s accomplishments, when you show compassion for other people’s sorrows, when you are clear in your expectations, when you have a positive outlook on life, when you value praising rather than shaming others, people will want to be on your team.

Katie Potts

Petoskey Cheese

Cheese queen, Owner, Idea Guru, Overall Cheerleader

Two Highlights: 1) Realizing that this community has been supporting me for (gasp) 10 years! In October we officially turn 10 years old, and it is honestly surreal that you guys make this dream come true every day. 2) When you guys shop with us and get as excited as we are about a certain product, cheese, class, sandwich, or just something delicious. It means the world that you guys can relish in our passion.

Oh gosh. What DOESN'T inspire me? Personally, I spend the majority of my time watching Food Network, burying my head into a cookbook, or just messing around in the kitchen. The simple art of eating is inspiration to me. I would be remiss if I didn't give a special shout-out to the strong and powerful women in my life who have always inspired me. My mom, who is a big believer that anyone can do or be anything, has always pushed me to be my best and keep a lighthearted attitude.

Advice: Be confident, be wise, and trust yourself. Know your strengths and be willing to hire or ask for help where you are weak. Time (in business) goes by very slow but very fast; it's a marathon, not a sprint. Keep at it.

Carrie L. Blanck

Tres Belle Interior Design

Owner, Interior Designer - Allied ASID

The best part of my job is the completion of a project. The client "reveal" is my favorite part. Most of the people that I work with visit their jobsite during the build or remodel, but probably are not there for move in day. My clients show up when it's finished, and it's very exciting to see their reaction of how everything came together!

Inspiration: Fabrics, wallpapers, and trims are an addiction, especially colorful ones. I am constantly looking at magazines, Instagram, Pinterest for new ideas, new products, new art, etc. I LOVE old houses. I cannot get enough of "touring" real estate on sites, or any other place that I can admire the old millwork, facades with special details, windows, corbels, rock work, etc. When I can find a store with old architectural salvage, it's like a gold mine.

Advice: Go for it. You only get so many chances to shoot for what you want. Be confident in your knowledge of your field, but humble enough to acknowledge when you make a mistake. Learn from it, apologize if needed, and move on. Find a career that you enjoy at least 80% of the time, because there will always be hard days.
