After School Tips
Children can often hold it together all day at school and once they reach their safe space of home can easily fall apart which may include meltdowns. It is best to honor your child's need to have some wind down time.

  • Healthy Snack - something chewy or sucking through a straw can be supportive of the nervous system (jerky, bagel, dried fruit, smoothie, suck applesauce through a straw)
  • Free Play - give choices if need be and follow your child's lead. If they seek movement, encourage a movement activity. If they seek quiet often, encourage a quiet activity - play-do, coloring, legos.
  • Nature hike or walk around the block - If possible walk with your child as this can be a great way to connect.
  • Outdoor Play - this can be in the backyard or at a playground. This can be a great way to de-stress from the day. Nature is so supportive of mental health as well.
  • Other specific activities: Jump on a trampoline, bounce on an exercise ball, body stretches like yoga poses, make something in the kitchen together.
  • Homework Tips
  • Alternate seating: On tummy, rocking chair, sit on an exercise ball, stand.
  • Oral tools: Chew gum, suck on a sucker or other hard candy
  • Location: Outdoors perhaps, next to a tree, designated space or table in your house.
