Bowling Down Main Street set for March 30

Not every town closes a street to let kids bowl, but Harbor Springs does! On Saturday, March 30, from noon to 2 p.m., kids of all ages will be able to, quite literally, bowl down Main Street. It all started as a joke about how Main Street is typically not too busy in this shoulder season, and it continues every year around April Fools Day. Join in the fun, whether it’s rain, shine, snow, wind, summer-like temps - you name it, the Harbor Springs Chamber will be there, at the intersection of State and Main, next to Johan's Pastry Shop.

In addition to bowling, check out these fun and mostly free features for the kids:

  • Get a FREE hot chocolate and donut for the kids at Johan's
  • Northern Lights Recreation will be giving away a FREE bowling card to all participants.
  • Rocking Horse Toy Co. will be giving away a FREEbie!
  • Harbor Springs Lyric Theatre will be showing “Problem Child” for 25 cents at 11 a.m.
  • Great Start Parent Coalition will give away FREE books to all children at their information table.
  • Little Traverse Bay Humane Society will also be attending with some adoptable pets.

Brought to you by: The Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce and Northern Lights Recreation.

Welcome, new chamber member!

Team Honor will have a team of riders participating in the Zoo-De-Mack. The March 15-17 event is a major fundraiser for our non-profit. On the same weekend, we will host a golf tournament at The Highlands at Harbor Springs. Captain Richard Phillips will play again this year and a dinner will be hosted following the tournament.

About Us - Team Honor is a registered 501(c)3, founded with the purpose of providing support and raising awareness for our nation's Gold and Blue Star Families, and Veterans during times of need. Our Team and generous donors extend time, talent and treasure to those going through a challenging time and look to connect them to additional resources within the Team Honor network when possible. Additionally, members are not only encouraged to inspire others to join the Team, but to get involved and support other groups and organizations who might benefit from their time, talent and treasure, as well.

When not assisting veterans and military families, you will find us participating as a Team at various public activities, such as endurance, cycling, hiking, swimming or running events. You will also find the Team volunteering at places like the National Cemetery, Festivals, speaking events and Military funerals. We have even participated in multiple chili, and rib cook-offs and are always looking for our next activity!

Team Honor has constructed an electrically assisted tricycle to enable veterans to participate in the ride who may be unable to because of health issues.

Part of the motivation for Team Honor’s founding was the need to support Gold Star families as evidenced by the life of Heath Robinson. Each year as we prepare for the Zoo-de-Mack ride we visit the memorial (pictured above) to Heath at the Cut River Bridge. Wearing the tan baseball cap is Captain Richard Phillips, who was rescued from Somali Pirates by Navy SEALs like Heath Robinson. Captain Phillips will be playing in Team Honor’s golf tournament again this year.

Small businesses impacted by lack of snow can apply for economic injury disaster loans

As Michigan continues to face record high winter temperatures, Governor Gretchen Whitmer urged Michigan small businesses impacted by lack of snow to apply for federal funding from the Small Business Administration (SBA). Amid the warmest winter on record, with days in February and March topping 60 degrees, federal Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available because of ongoing federal drought declarations affecting 42 Michigan counties.

"Michiganders are used to tough winters, but this year’s record-setting warm winter has been tough in a different way, causing economic hardships for small businesses and regional economies that rely on snow,” said Governor Whitmer. “I know how hard this winter has been on families and communities who rely on winter tourism revenue and all the associated business that comes with it - hotels, restaurants, and shops. Fortunately, businesses in these 42 counties in the UP and the Northern Lower Peninsula can apply for support right now. A drought is a drought - whether we’re talking about rain or snow. Businesses impacted by low snow in these 42 counties can apply for support right now, and I’ll continue to push our federal government for more solutions. We’ll get through this warm winter together.”

Conservancy hosting apple tree pruning workshop at Offield Family Reserve

Join the Little Traverse Conservancy for a workshop focusing on the pruning and care of apple trees from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, March 16, at the abandoned apple orchard at the Offield Family Working Forest Reserve (corner of W. Led by LTC’s Recreation Field Supervisor Nate Dionne, whose family has run an apple orchard business for many years, this workshop will feature demonstrations of pruning old and abandoned apple trees to increase their vigor, productivity, and appearance. Participants will then have the chance to put these principles and objectives to use on the trees found at the Offield Working Forest Reserve outside of Harbor Springs.

Participants are invited to bring their own loppers/pole saws. Limited quantities of tools including pruners and pole saws will be available for use during the hands-on portion of the workshop. To register, visit www.landtrust.org or call 231.347.0991.

CHAMBER MEMBER NEWS BRIEFS

BEN FOLDS RETURNS - Emmy-nominated, multi-platinum selling pianist and singer-songwriter Ben Folds will return to the historic John M. Hall Auditorium stage on Friday, June 28, at 8 p.m. Folds will bring the return of his popular “Paper Airplane Request Tour” after first performing in Bay View in 2018 to a sold-out crowd. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. this Thursday, March 7, at www.bayviewassociation.org. Prices range from $45-$85. What initially began years ago as a request for songs as encores will once again be a central element in Folds’ shows when he engages audiences to make their song requests via paper airplanes. “The last time I did this on tour the response was overwhelming, with literally hundreds of paper airplanes with song requests being launched on cue from fans at the start of the second half of each of my concerts,” said Folds. “It’s the purest, most low-tech form of engagement that creates a special bond with my audiences.”

RAVEN HILL Discovery Center’s latest newsletter focuses on "Old Stuff." Director Cheri Leach writes: “It seems particularly fitting for us to recognize National Old Stuff Day on this 2nd day of March, because we make room for a lot of old stuff here. Sometimes it fits perfectly in one of our timelines, like old telephones or typewriters. Other times, visitors may notice that many of our exhibits are found displayed on

old furniture or in old display cases. As the saying goes, 'One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.'" More from their latest newsletter. Raven Hill is open to the public noon to 4pm on Saturdays and 2pm to 4pm on Sundays, plus any other time by appointment. You can call 231.536.3369 or email info@miravenhill.org for reservations during the week. Be sure to schedule field trips, birthday parties or scout groups soon. A lot of spring field trip days are already booked. Detailed information on coming events like the April 8 Solar Eclipse, exhibits like “Under Michigan and Beyond - Rocks & Minerals” and programs like “Summer Classes for Kids” will be forthcoming.
