In Focus: Bridging the Gap in Food Assistance for Families in Need

On March 1st, New Jersey’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) returned to its pre-COVID funding amounts, ending the emergency allotment (EA) distributed to families in need during the pandemic. For many low-income families, this funding loss translates into an increased need for food assistance, especially as inflation looms and many households are struggling to pay bills.

JFS Kosher Food Pantries are seeing a dramatic increase in requests for food and support. If you or your organization can help keep our shelves stocked, please donate online or organize a food drive to help local families in need. Thank you for your support!

One Decision, A Rewarding Life

Being the first to go against the grain comes with risks and challenges, but the journey is the experience of a lifetime. For one of our seniors from JFS’ Lunch with Friends program, Mrs. I, her story of breaking through the status quo came when she decided to pursue a career blending health, wellness and teaching. "I knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I also enjoyed moving my body." While she considered dance, she found purpose in bridging the mind, body and spirit practice of yoga.

"When I started teaching yoga, it was seen as a hobby, but not a career. It was intimidating to be a woman pursuing a career that seemed unusual, but I felt strongly about it, and got lucky to find a group of supportive people."

On this International Women's Day (March 8), let's remember the inspiring women who surround us with stories of small victories to big triumphs, stories of making a difference, and who live their lives pursuing a path less traveled, helping other women have new options in this world. International Women's Day is a global celebration honoring the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women as well as progressing women's equality. We hope this month you take time to celebrate the women inspiring change locally!

JFS’ Lunch with Friends is a weekly congregate meal program for seniors who live in Middlesex County.
