Good Monday Morning,
What a wonderfully warm weekend we had. The buds are already on the trees, and I can't wait for the blooms! I hope you had a chance to get out and enjoy the weather!
Our SCT Newsletter will be mailed out on Thursday to those who have requested it. You can click on the following link: NEWSLETTER, or you can go to our website at any time to view our newsletter under the "About Us" tab.
We had a great month of speakers in February for "Adventures in Learning," and we're on to April! April Adventures in Learning registration is now open! Click on the link below to register. Please note that only one speaker, our friend, Tom Luellen, at 10:30 Friday, April 30.
We are excited to announce that, starting March 15, Shirley Edgerton will begin teaching her SMS - Strength, Mobility, Stability Exercise Group at GRACE UMC ONLY - Monday and Thursday, 10:00 - 10:45; Grace UMC is located at 2627 SW Western Ave, Topeka. As some of you might know, Shirley had to stop teaching her class due to shingles. I am so glad she is feeling good and can start teaching her class again. I know she enjoys her class. It's been a rough winter for her.
The board meeting is on Friday, March 12. Please let me or any of our board members know if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns.
Blessings,
Karen Willard

Shawnee County’s Schoolchildren - How You Can Help
|
During the Feb. 26 Adventures in Learning, Carrie Higgins spoke about Impact Avenues, a program to combat homelessness among Shawnee County’s schoolchildren. The City of Topeka is the backbone agency for Impact Avenues, and about 35 local partner agencies contribute toward a collective impact. Modeled after Impact KCK, Wyandotte County’s successful program, Impact Avenues gets referrals from schools—or during Covid, from social service agencies. Referred families and agency representatives gather once a week, giving the parents convenient access to social services and education. The program provides one class per week in four areas: budgeting, housing, employment, and healthcare. Getting each family in housing is an immediate goal; Cornerstone’s transitional housing program has been a great resource in this area. After the parent(s) complete all four classes, a social worker provides intensive case management for 12 months, and the families remain in the program until their youngest child graduates from high school. A long-term goal is to break the cycle of generational poverty for these families.
How can Shepherd’s Center members help Impact Avenues? Immediate needs: (1) Furniture. Often the family only owns clothing, kept in garbage bags, so they need basic furniture for a 2-bedroom house. (2) Household items such as dishes, pots, and pans, glasses, flatware, linens, etc. (3) Volunteers to pick up furniture donations and deliver it to a warehouse and/or to move it into a house for a family. If you have a pick-up truck and would be willing to be on a list for helping in this area, please contact Walter Horn (see directory). (4) Monetary donations go to Topeka Community Foundation, marked for Impact Avenues.
