Again, due to the circumstances of this past year, clinics are filling up extremely fast. Do not get caught short in December by not renewing your certification soon enough. If this is something that piques your interest, please email Dave Zednik, IHOA Registrar at registrar@ihoa.com and he will get you pointed in the right direction to get started.
Here are some great reasons to become an official

*Learning the rules and how they affect the game.
*Learning to see the game from different sight lines.
*Staying as part of a team.
*Create your own availability/flexible schedule.
*Good pay: We make between $20-$50/hour depending on the leagues you work.

Ask the Official by Dave Zednik
QUESTION: How much competitive contact should be allowed at the younger levels of play?
ANSWER: Competitive body contact should be allowed in all instances provided it is done within the definition of competitive contact. Competitive Contact is a hockey skill that needs to be developed and encouraged at all levels of play. Players should be allowed to compete and gain possession of the puck using their body to establish and maintain their position using legal methods. At the same time, officials should be diligent in enforcing body checking in Competitive Contact categories any time a player shifts their focus away from playing the puck and instead intentionally plays the body with an overt hip, shoulder or forearm with no attempt to gain possession of the puck.

Brown was officiating a peewee game at Barrington Ice Arena and at one point she whistled offsides ... on a breakaway. Needless to say, the crowd was not too pleased. Brown, though, survived this officiating glitch and tried to learn something new each time she took the ice. And she did. READ MORE>>

All In The Family: Third-Generation Hockey Star Dineen Claims USHL Award
By Ross Forman - Will Dineen has had a pressure-packed hockey career, every shift in every game of every season. Even before he gets on the ice. His name says it all. Just consider: His grandfather, Bill Dineen, played for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks, winning two Stanley Cups for the Wings. He then coached in the WHL, AHL and NHL, and, in 2010, was elected as an inaugural inductee into the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame. His dad, Kevin Dineen, played close to 1,200 regular-season games in the NHL and he too went into coaching with time in the AHL and NHL, including 2014-2018 as a Blackhawks' assistant. READ MORE>>
